Twisted 2

Chapter 2

Maya couldn’t wait for the plane to land. After seven long years, she’s finally coming home! During her second year in med school, she flew to the States to finish her studies. She was lucky enough to get into the program of one of the famous med schools in Seattle. And since her big brother, Simon, lives there, she decided to take the chance and study there.

It was very hard to adjust since the culture she grew up on is totally different in the foreign country. And it was also hard to adjust in studying since she felt so inferior to the students she was with. But with Richard’s help, she gained confindence and soon enough, she became one of the top students in the university.

The two of them never lost any form of communication. Even after Richard graduated engineering and started to work, Maya was always there to cheer him on. She couldn’t be prouder when Richard started his own company, LAS. It was just unfortunate that she couldn’t come home to celebrate those moments with him. But now, she can finally treasure those moments because she will be there with them now.

“Thank you for flying with us! Have a nice evening.” The words blasted from the speaker that made Maya smile even more. Finally! She is home.

Maya grabbed her things and left the plane. After grabbing some more of her things outside, she started to look around some familiar face. Kute told her before she left that someone will be there to fetch her since she can’t be there because of her son’s event and she will be so late if she tried to make it. She noticed that there was someone, at the back of all those people, holding a bouquet up high as if trying to prevent peole to bump on it. She found it amusing but then she went back to searching for someone.

“Suplada.” She heard someone say and then the bouquet she saw a while ago was now right in front of her. She turned around and smiled so wide. “Welcome home!!”

“RICHAAAAAAARD!!!!” She squeeled so loud and skipped to give him a hug. “Miss na miss na kita!” She said.

Maya felt Richard’s arms around him tighten as he returned the hug. “I missed you rin! Uy teka yung flowers mo! Iningat ingatan ko pa yan na wag masira!” He said.

His best friend stepped back and smiled at him. “Ikaw pala yung may dala nito kanina!” She exclaimed.

“Oo. Para sakin talaga ‘yan e. Kaso bigla kong naalala na pauwi ka na pala ngayon.” He joked and they both laughed. “It’s really for you, Maya.”

“Alam ko!” Maya replied. She just looked at Richard from head to toe and smiled.

“O. What’s with that smile?” Richard asked.

“Ang gwapo mo kasi!” Maya answered. It’s true. She knew Richard was already good looking when she met him but Richard just got more handsome. Age really does a lot of things. His body is now strongly built and he looks even smarter now than before. Yep. She’s not even afraid to said that Richard looks so hot. “Pag ba niligawan kita, sasagutin mo ko?” She teased.

“Yeah sure.” Richard answered. “Pero maging lalaki ka muna ha.” He added and Maya laughed so hard. “Tara na nga. Pinagtitripan mo na naman ako.” He said and grabbed the cart away from Maya.

“Ito naman hindi mabiro!” Maya said and clung unto Richard’s arm. “Bakit ikaw ang sumundo?” She asked.

“Kute called me. She said na mas pinagkakatiwalaan daw nya ako kaysa ipasundo ka sa kung kanino.” He answered. “San ka magsstay ngayon though?”

“Hala! Dapat kasi uuwi ako samin sa Laguna.” Maya said. “Kaya pa naman. Maaga pa.”

“Are you crazy? Maya, it’s almost ten in the evening. I won’t even allow you to go home.” Richard immediately said.

“Saan ako matutulog?” She asked.

“Sa bahay.” Richard simply replied as he continued to push the cart. Then he noticed that Maya stopped so he went back. “Hindi ako nagdadala ng lalaki sa bahay. You have nothing to worry about.” He said.

“Baliw. Nakakahiya na sa’yo, Richard. Saka hindi alam nina Nanay.” Maya replied.

Richard reached for his phone inside his pocket and dialed a number. After a few rings, the person he called finally answered. “Hello po Nay Tere!” He replied.

“Richard! Bat kausap mo si Nanay!” Maya quickly said and attempted to get Richard’s phone from him.

“Wait nga Nay, I’ll put it on loudspeker. Ang likot kasi ni Maya e.” Richard said and pushed a button on his phone. “There. Masaya ka na ba?” He said pertaining to Maya.

“Hello Nak! Nasundo ka na pala ni Ricky e. Sorry talaga kasi hindi kami nakapunta ng Ate mo.” Maya’s mother said.

“Naku Nay, ayos lang po. Mas kailangan po kayo ni Cho. Saka uuwi naman po ako ngayon.” Maya as she looked at Richard triumphantly.

“Ha? Nak. Mag aalas-diyes na. May aabutan ka pa bang bus? Saka ang dami-dami mong dala. Delikadong sobra, Maya.” Her mother countered, bringing a sly smile to Richard’s face. “Ricky nak, pwede bang doon muna tumuloy si Maya sa bahay nyo? Baka may bakante pang kwarto doon?”

Richard’s smile got even wider as he teasingly looked at his best friend. “That is exactly the reason why I called you Nay. Pinaayos ko na nga yung guest room. Ayaw kasing pumayag ni Maya. Akala nya siguro gagapangin ko sya.” Richard said.

“Nay grabe naman ‘tong si Richard. Hindi naman po sa gano-”

“Maya, may tiwala ako kay Richard. Saka isa pa, alam kong hinding hindi ka nyan gagapangin!” Teresita interrupted. “Baka nga ikaw pa ang manggapang Maya e.”

“Nay! Grabe naman po kayo sa anak nyo. Halatang mas gusto nyo ‘tong si Richard kaysa sakin e.” Maya exclaimed while Richard just laughed.

“Ang anak ko talaga nagdrama pa! Gusto ko lang ipadama sa’yo na sobra ang tiwala ko dyan sa kaibigan mo.” Her mother explained.

“Nay wag kayong mag alala. Hindi kami talo ni Maya.” Richard said. “Sobrang mamon ng puso ko.”

“Nako Ricky. Matagal ko nang sinasabi na wag kang magsasalita ng tapos. Baka makahanap ka ng katapat mo.” Teresita said. “Ay teka nga Maya, nakikitulog ka na dati kina Ricky ‘di ba?”

“Oo nga Nay. And as far as I can rememer, Mama and Papa favored you more than their own daughter. Kaya si Nay Tere yung kakampi ko ‘di ba?” Richard added.

Maya rolled her eyes at Richard. “Oo sige na. Payag na kong sa inyo matulog.” Maya declared. “Sige na Nay! Matulog na kayo. Kulit kasi nitong si Richard e.”

“Yes. Sorry Nay! I am just concerned with Maya’s safety. Feeling ko naman mas safe sya sa bahay.” Richard added.

“O sige na. Ricky, ikaw na muna ang bahala dyan sa anak ko ha. Saka samahan mo bukas. Naghahanap ata ng mapapasukan na ospital.” Teresita said. “Mag ingat kayo. Good night.”

“Good night Nay!” Both of them said.

“Richard, nasa bahay mo ba si Manang Fe?” Maya asked as she followed Richard to the parking lot.

“Yep. But I doubt it na gising pa sya. Maybe you can talk to her tomorrow morning. Bakit ba?” Richard asked as he stacked Maya’s luggage in the trunk of his car.

“Gawa kasi ng pasalubong ko.” She said then got inside the car.

After a while Richard followed and as he started the engine of his car he said, “Buti pa si Manang may pasalubong. Paano na lang ako?” He said and gave Maya a sad face.

“First of all, I have a feeling na hindi ka pa nakakamove-on kaya hindi ako naghanap ng lalaki-

“Maya, I don’t like American boys. All they want is one night stands. I want romance –

“Hindi pa kasi ako tapos ‘di ba?” Maya interrupted and her friend went mum. “Ayun. Walang boys. I can’t even think of anything material to give you kasi it feels like you already have everything.” She said and Richard kept silent. “Kaya puso ko na lang yung ibibigay ko sa’yo!” She said and formed a heart using her hands.

“Maging lalaki ka muna.” He simply said. He knew Maya is just teasing him like she always did way back when.

“Hep! Sabi nga ni nanay, wag na wag kang magsasalita ng tapos!” Maya happily teased while Richard just brushed it off and reversed his car. He leaned back to watch the back of his car as it move backwards. “Ayaw mo ng puso ko? O sya kiss na lang.” Maya said and leaned forward in an attempt to kiss Richard’s cheek.

On the other hand, Richard was about to join her banters when he heard that Maya is going to kiss him. So he turned his head to look at her but it was the worst decision he ever made.

He found himself a few inches away from Maya’s lips. He was momentarily stunned. He knew that his friend is just playing a prank but why does he feel like this?

His heart hammered so loud as if wanting to leap out of his chest. For a moment, he does not know what to do. His mind is just blank as he stared at his bestfriend’s lips.

For a moment he even wished that their lips would meet.

“O natigilan ka dyan?” Maya asked when she saw how Richard looks. “Hey. Richard! Are you okay?” She asked.

“Ah, y-yes I’m f-fine.” He stammered. He quickly changed gears and started to drive home. The ride home was silent since Maya fell asleep. It was also a good thing since Richard had time to think about what happened earlier. He doesn’t even know what was in his head that made him think about that.

“Broken hearted ka lang siguro Ricky. It will pass.” He muttered to himself.

Wherever You Will Go 30

Chapter 30

I felt something moving on my lap. My eyes fluttered open when I realized that I’ve fallen asleep instead of looking out for Sir Dean. I looked at the couch and was surprised that he’s gone. I quickly stood up and scanned his office. Still, he is not around.

“Asan na ‘yon?” I muttered. Sir Ryan and Ma’am Ched left earlier since they still have to continue doing the exams for their student back at their tables. But they said that they won’t be leaving yet until they accompany Ricky back home safe. I glanced at my watch and saw that it’s already six in the evening. I hurriedly walked to leave his office but before I could even open the door, it quickly opened and Ricky came into view.

He just stared at me and clenched his jaws. “I didn’t want to wake you up. I just went to the comfort room.” He said. And without waiting for my answer, he walked past me and sat on his chair. He pulled out the iPad from his bag and started scanning it.

My heart just ached from that scene. I know that it’s hard for him, yet he doesn’t want to let it out. He just buries all the ache and stores it away somewhere, untouched, so that he could maintain his strong façade. I walked until I am behind him and then I hugged him from there. Ricky froze a bit, but then I felt his hands on my arms and just held it tightly.

“Just let it all out Richard.” I whispered. And I think that did the trick. He stood up and just hugged me. I could hear him sob on my shoulder. I enclosed my arms around him and tried to make him feel better. “It’s not your fault, it’s not your fault.” I kept on saying.

“I just feel so useless.” He muttered. “I don’t think I can do this anymore.”

I sighed and took a step back. I placed my hands on either side of his face and wiped his tears with my thumbs. “It has always been my childhood dream to be a doctor. Pangarap kong magsuot ng puting lab coat tapos may stethoscope sa leeg.” I started and his eyes just stared at mine in the most confused way he can. “As I got older, my view changed. It’s not just only because of those material things but I want to be a doctor because I want to save lives. ‘Yung titignan nila ako sa mata, papasalamatan ng buong puso, tapos uuwi nang magaan ang loob, kasi alam nila na gagaling sila. At naniniwala sila sa kakayahan at kaalaman ko na lahat ng sasabihin ko sa kanila ay para sa ikabubuti nila.” I said. “And that is something money couldn’t buy.”

“But why are you ..” Ricky trailed off.

“Bat wala ako sa med school?” I finished his question and he just nodded. “Yung totoo? Financial eh. I tried getting scholarships pero kasi nga may bad record ako sa genetics ‘di ba? At first, oo, aaminin ko, disappointed ako kasi ikaw na nga ‘tong may pure na intensyon para mag-aral, ikaw pa ‘tong hindi pinalad. But I also learned that I could also help people kahit hindi ako doctor. Research can change everything just like doctors. Kung wala ‘yung research namin, hindi kayo makakapanggamot.” I continued and gave him a smile. “Ikaw? Sabi mo dati, ikaw ‘yung may gustong mag-doktor. Pinilit ka lang ni Tito mag Doctor in Philosophy.” I asked and he just nodded. “Bakit?”

Sir Dean took a deep breath and stared on the floor for a while. “It was Alex who wanted it. But because we’re close, she influenced me. She made me realize that I can make the world better. And because of our family status, everything is possible and that we must use it on the best way possible.” He started. Sir Dean looked back at the floor again. “Then .. then she died.” He said, his voice cracking up. “When she died, my whole world died with her. She was the best Ate I could ever have. So I just decided I would be a doctor, just like what she wanted.” Ricky stated. “So I took it. First year was hard but I got through. Not just because I want to continue what Alex wanted but … I found my place there. I suddenly want to be the person who would make the difference, who would stand between death and life itself. I want to be a doctor that would make Alex and my mom proud.” Sir Dean continued, his voice steadier this time. Then he looked at me. “And I want to save the mothers and Alex’s of all the families out there. But .. but it’s just like reliving everything –“

“Hindi ganon ‘yon, okay?” I interrupted and just looked at me like he just lost everything. “I know that it hurts so much pero kasi Ricky kung bibitaw ka ngayon, paano na lang ‘yung mga susunod pa? Like Alex and your mom, they need you. They need you to be strong for them. And believe me, if you understand what I’m saying, alam kong ngayon pa lang, kahit wala pang MD sa dulo ng pangalan mo, proud na proud na sa’yo si Alex at si Tita.” I explained, trying to smile at him. I do hope my message can get through. “There are still a lot of mothers and Alex’s that need saving. You can’t possibly give up now.” I added.

Ricky just stared at me and then his eyes just relaxed. He took a deep breath and nodded. Then his lips curved up a bit to give me his famous smirk. “I guess you are right.” He muttered.

I rolled my eyes at him. “Syempre, tama ako. Ako pa?” I mocked and he finally chuckled.

“What would I do without you, Maya Dela Rosa?” He said and kept on staring at me. He closed our gaps and gave me a warm embrace. “Thank you.” He muttered.

“Okay ka na ba? Kailangan mo ba ng tubig? Pagkain?” I quickly asked. Sir Dean leaned back and looked at me amusedly. “Sabi ni Tito Roberto, ihatid ka na raw namin sa bahay niyo pagkagising mo. Nasa labas lang sina Sir Ryan, si .. si Ma’am Ched –“

I abruptly stopped when I felt his lips on my forehead. It stayed there for long and it made me feel like he wants to thank me for everything that I did for him. “Okay na ko. You’ve done enough.” He said after. “So I’m assuming they canceled my class with you?” He asked and I just nodded as an answer while Ricky just laughed at me. “Pwede mo ba akong samahan?”

“S-San?” I managed to mutter.

“Sa mall. I still don’t have any gift for Inigo. The party’s already tomorrow, right?” He replied.

“P-Pero Ricky! Hindi pa pwede. Kailangan mong magpahinga! Umiiyak ka pa kanina tapos ngayon, pagkatahan mo, gagala na agad tayo? Bipolar lang? Saka sabi nga ni Tito –“

I stopped again when he leaned in to kiss the tip of my nose. “One more word and I think you already know what’s gonna happen next.” He whispered.

I swallowed the lump on my throat and managed to take a step back and nodded. “K-Kunin ko lang ‘yung bag ko.” I softly muttered and left him. I just need to get out of his office. I could feel that my whole face is red right now and I could feel my heart hammering fast.

“Maya, are you okay? Bat pulang pula ka?” Sir Ryan said as I stood there awkwardly outside Sir Dean’s office.

“H-Ha? Ah, o-okay lang ako Sir Ryan.” I managed to answer and then I forced a smile.

“Is he okay?” He asked and I just nodded. Sir Ryan stood up from his seat and made his way inside while I am still standing there. After a few seconds, my feet managed to walk to my table and took a deep breath to regain my composure.

“Maya, Maya, kumalma ka.” I muttered. When I reached my chair, my mind replayed just what happened inside the office. I could still feel Sir Dean’s lips on my forehead and on my nose and then suddenly, I squealed by the kilig that rushed through me.

Then it hit me. “Baka ‘pag hindi ako umalis ..” I muttered then I placed my hand on my lips. Maybe that would’ve happened. I quickly scanned the faculty. Good thing that there’s no one but Sir Ryan who witnessed what just happened. Then I squealed again.

The door to Sir Dean’s office bolted open. I quickly straightened in my seat and looked for my bag around. I quickly grabbed it and pretend that I was fixing things before someone could even go out of the office.

“Are you sure? Have you called Tito yet? Ako malalagutan don eh.” I heard Sir Ryan’s voice.

“I already texted him. I’m fine, Ryan. I swear.” Sir Dean’s voice followed.

Sir Ryan just sighed. “Fine. Not because I’m happy with this but I know you’re okay whenever you call me like that. And besides, may kasama ka naman pala eh.” Then went silent for a bit and when I looked up, I saw the two of them looking at me. “I’ll get going then. May last minute shopping pa kami ni Raffi. Tita Ched already went home.” He said as he went to his table and packed his things. “I’ll see you two tomorrow. 3PM ha? Have a great night.” He said and finally left.

“Do you still need a few minutes? I can wait outside.” Sir Dean said. He has his bag slung on his arm and he looks like he is ready to go.

“Okay na ko.” I said with a smile.

Sir Dean chuckled. “Okay na talaga?” He said and I guess he meant if I’m okay, considering what happened earlier.

I just smiled at him. “Okay na.” I replied. I stood up and walked just until I’m beside him.

“Tayo na?” He asked.

I bit my lower lip. There’s just something about his question that yells more. “Tara na.” I replied.

Ricky chuckled and shook his head. “Okay.” He said. Then I felt his hand near mine. When it’s already on top of it, he sneaks his fingers inside my palm and opened it, then entwined it with his. “Let’s go.” He said and I just melted with that huge smile on his face.

We arrived shortly at the mall. Ricky’s hand never let go of mine even though he is driving. It’s a good thing his car is automatic. “So what do you want to eat?” He suddenly asked. I looked at him and I looked at him strangely. “What? Hindi pa ako kumakain. And all that crying made me famished.”

“Ikaw bahala, saan mo ba gustong kumain?” I replied.

“I’m asking you that question, Maya.” He said. “Ganto na lang. What do you want to eat right now?”

I looked at him and saw that he is smiling over me. His eyes are a bit red and puffed but he still managed to give me that warm smile. “Pizza.”

Ricky’s smile just got wider and pulled me. “Let’s go then. You read my mind. Gusto ko rin ng pizza eh.” We settled inside Yellow Cab and he ordered a pizza and a Charlie chan. I spent most of our time mocking him because of his breakdown earlier. Sir Dean played along well, I don’t think that he got annoyed, even a bit.

“I’m not really good with gifts.” Sir Dean said as we strolled in the toy section of the department store. We spent too much time in eating and now we really need to buy a gift since the mall will soon close. “What should I buy? Okay lang na teddy bear?” He said as he grabbed one from the stand.

I chuckled at his suggestion. “Ricky, seven years old na si Inigo. Hindi teddy bear ang kailangan non.” I said as I grabbed the bear using my free hand and placed it back on the stand.

“How about like, xbox, or those Nintendo things?” He asked again.

“Galante.” I muttered with a smile. “Pero hindi eh. ‘Yan ang problema ng mga bata ngayon. Puro na lang iPads, cellphone, tablet, laging ganon na lang ang hawak.” I stated.

“Now you sound like a mother.” He said flatly. When I narrowed my eyes at him, he just laughed.

“May anak kasi si Kute, Ricky. Si Cho. Kaya alam ko ‘yung mga bagay na ‘yan eh. Actually, pwede na talaga akong mag-asa-“ I bit my lower lip and looked away from him.

“Again? Pwede ka na nang what?” He teased.

“Pwede na kong mang-asar.” I quickly replied and he just continued to laugh. “May bike na ba si Inigo?” I asked.

“I really don’t know. Pero I am betting na meron na. I think Molina mentioned it once that he got him a bike. Or was it his own bike?” He replied.

“You’re a horrible friend, Ricky.” I replied.

“Pero hindi horrible na boyfriend.” He said and I just looked at him with a smile. “I’m doing good so far, ‘di ba?”

“Nanliligaw ka pa lang, Ricky.” I reminded him. After a few minutes of walking, I finally saw the perfect gift for Inigo. “Ito Ricky! Feeling ko bagay na regalo!” I exclaimed. It’s one of those remote controlled drones. I grabbed one and quickly placed it back.

“O, what’s the matter, why did you put it back?” Ricky asked.

“Mahal eh.” I said.

“Yes? What is it?” He quickly said.

My brows furrowed at him. “Mahal nga.”

“Bakit nga?” He replied again and I could see the hint of amusement in his eyes.

“Ricky. Mahal.” I still said.

“Yes? Bakit?” He just went on.

“Alam mo ang kulit mo eh. Mahal nga eh.” I annoyingly said.

Ricky just chuckled. “Maya, as much as I want your endearment, akala ko ba wala pang tayo?” He said.

My eyes widened at him when I realized what he meant. “R-Ricky! ‘Yung drone ‘yung mahal! As in .. ano, e-expensive!” I defended.

He just continued to laugh. “It’s alright. I understand. I just wanted to tease you.” He said as he removed his hold in my hand and placed it on my side to give me a hug. “So, ito na ‘yung ireregalo natin?” He asked. “I’ll just share your gift kaysa magpaikot-ikot pa tayo dito.” He said.

“Bibilhin mo talaga ‘to?” I asked.

“Yes. Why not?” He asked back.

“Eh kasi seven years old lang si Inigo. May chance na masisira lang ‘yung laruan. Sayang ‘yung pera ‘di ba?” I stated.

Ricky slowly nodded as he considers my suggestion. “How about we buy those helicopter thing muna? I think it costs less, don’t you think?” He asked and I just nodded. Finally, we have our gift.

“Umuwi ka na Ricky. Pagod ka na rin eh.” I said as he stopped in front of our house and said that maybe it’s time to meet my family. “We could always do this some other time.” I said.

Ricky nodded. “Do you want some help with your thesis?” He asked.

“’Wag na, Ricky. Ang dami mo nang naitulong. Kaya ko na ‘to.” I said. “Uwi ka na ha. Magpahinga ka na. Baka hinihintay ka na rin ni Tito.”

He just smiled at me and nodded. “Opo, uuwi na.” He answered. “I had a great day, Maya. And thank you, again, for bringing me back to my senses.”

“Wala ‘yon. Sabi mo nga dati, ‘I’ll do anything for you.’ Sige na. Tatapusin ko pa ‘yung thesis ko. I had a great time, too. Goodnight.” I said.

Ricky leaned in and laid a kiss on my forehead. “Goodnight. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.” He said. I watched him sped off. After helping a bit in the chibugan, I went inside my room to finish my school works. I know I’ll finish it within the night. Ricky is enough to fuel my inspiration.

A/N:

Sorry po! I’ve been trying to figure out how I’m going to run this story. Thank you po for waiting!

Chapter 29

“Maya!” A voice called me as I entered the faculty. “Don’t forget Inigo’s birthday tomorrow, okay? I’ll be expecting you.” I saw that it was Sir Ryan with a huge smile on his face. I could see that he is really excited to celebrate his son’s birthday.

“Nako Sir, wala pa pala akong regalo!” I suddenly blurted out. I’ve been so busy with the last few lectures before final exams next week and I’m still doing my thesis in Sir Dean’s class.

Sir Ryan just smiled at me. “Don’t worry. ‘Yung pagpunta mo pa lang, Malaki nang regalo. Besides, I can’t really blame you. Finals na kasi eh. Ang daming pending projects and exams. Kahit kay Doc, busy kayo ano?”

“Oo Sir Ryan. Sobrang hassle. Pero tatapusin ko na mamaya. Konting push na lang kahit Friday. Madali lang naman ‘yung ginawa kong topic for thesis.” I replied.

“That’s good then! But seriously, Maya, I really hope you can come. Pati na rin si Lim.” He said and gave me a wink.

I sat down on my chair and reached for my notes. I have another long test coming up on Sir Dean’s class. First semester will soon end and it feels like it’s been years. I really need to do well so that I could apply for scholarship again. And with that, I don’t have to work part-time.

“Maya! Kain tayo. Nagdala ng pancit si Zenaida. Nailabas na kasi ng ospital ‘yung anak niya. Mar already bought drinks.” Ma’am Ched happily said. Her eyes shifted from my face to the notebook I’m holding on my hands. “Long test na naman? Mamaya na ‘yan. It can wait and the food cannot.” She said.

“Okay po Ma’am.” I replied. I stood up and followed her to the table where we do our meetings. She handed me a paper plate and Sir Mar gave me a cup of soft drinks. All the professors are exchanging stories and puns about their day. I laughed along with them. Yes, my notes can wait. Even though all of us are stressed and busy, this moment that we’re having is already enough to remove all of it. Who knows? This is actually a family I never thought that I would have.

“Sino pa bang single dito?” Ruby, a fellow professor, asked.

“Well, as far as I know, tatlo na lang kayo. Ikaw, then there’s Ms. Tina, and Ms. Annie.” Sir Mar said.

“Ay si Maya pa, Sir. Bago lang.” Sir Ryan quickly said then he winked at me. I just rolled my eyes at him. “Single pa nga ba, Ms. Maya?”

“Single pa, Sir.” I rode along.

“Hay nako, bakit ba big deal kung single sila?” Ma’am Ched butted in. “More or less naman makakahanap na rin sila ng partner nila dito sa school. Just wait for it girls. Usually, if not from our department, he’ll be in the other colleges.” She continued.

“No need to reminisce Ms. Ched!” Sir Mar quickly said making us all laugh. Ma’am Ched’s husband is actually a professor in the College of Engineering and Architecture.

“Pero Sir, ‘di ba po si Doc Santelices, single pa?” Tina inquired.

“Well, yes, I think he is.” Sir Mar answered and Tina, along with Ruby and Annie squealed. “O, may fans club pala si Doc dito eh!”

“Sir naman. Ang gwapo kasi ni Doc. Lalo na nung trip sa Baguio. Lagi syang ngumingiti!” Annie said with a huge smile on her face.

“Mukhang madami kang kaagaw.” Sir Ryan whispered beside me.

I just chuckled and played along. “I don’t think so, Sir. Nag-iisa lang ako kay Ricky eh.” I whispered back and it made Sir Ryan laughed. The banter about Sir Dean continued and it actually made me miss him even more. The last time that I saw him was that Wednesday morning. He’s been busy in med school, something that I would understand because of the relationship I had with Simon. He usually calls me at night but only for a brief of time. It would either be me telling him to go to sleep or he’ll fall asleep in the middle of the call. But he never fails to greet me good morning every day with a text.

In the middle of the whole laughter, the door suddenly opened with a loud sound. Silence enveloped the faculty as we watched the door to see who’s going to come in. After a few seconds, Sir Dean came into view. His head is bowed down and he looks like a mess. He walked slowly until he got inside his office without even saying hello to us.

“Uh, excuse me.” Sir Ryan said and he quickly followed Sir Dean inside his office.

“Well, the boss is back. Ubusin na natin ‘tong pancit para makauwi na rin ‘yung iba.” Sir Mar spoke. All of the professors just nodded and the stories went back on.

“Ma’am, balik na po ako sa table ko, magre-review lang –“

“Maya, I think you should check on them.” Ma’am Ched said.

“Ched’s right. Sige na. Kami na ang bahala.” Sir Mar butted in. I just nodded at them. I discreetly left them so that no other teacher will notice that I’m gone.

I quickly got inside the room and to my surprise, it’s all dark. I flipped the switch inside the room and saw that Sir Dean and Sir Ryan are sitting on the floor at the corner of the office.

“Maya, just stay with him. I’ll just tell Tita Ched to cancel his class at 6PM. I’ll also get some food. Just .. just stay with him.” Sir Ryan said as he stood up. I just nodded and when the doors closed, my eyes found Sir Dean.

His arms are on top of his knees while his hands are around his bowed head. I slowly walked until I am beside him and then I sat on the floor beside him. I don’t know what happened. Did something happen in the hospital? But even if it is, I have never seen Simon like this.

“Ricky?” I softly said. “Ricky, I’m just here okay?” I continued.

“They’re .. dead.” He softly muttered.

“S-Sino?” I nervously asked.

“I .. I .. I did everything I could .. but .. but ..” He continued then I heard a soft sob. I quickly put my arms around him and tried to give him a hug. “I wasn’t enough.”

“Ricky, ‘wag mong sabihin ‘yan.” I replied.

“They died right before my eyes. I’m supposed to heal them .. but  .. but .. they just ..” He continued and then the sobs grew louder and now he’s crying. He shifted in his position to hug me back. “I’m not good enough.”

I took a deep breath and I decided to put my hands on each side of his face and looked at him. His eyes are red and I could see that he hasn’t gotten that much sleep. “Ricky, makinig ka sa’kin. Everything happens for a reason, okay? If things didn’t go according to plan, it doesn’t mean that you’re not good enough. It means that you have to be strong for them. And that you have to keep working hard para sa susunod, ikaw na ‘yung makikipaglaban para sa kanila.” I told him as I wiped the tears from his eyes. “May tulog ka na ba?”

Sir Dean just shook his head and leaned on the wall behind him. He took a deep breath then he brought his hands together and started to fidget. “One adult female, one adult male, a teen girl and a young boy. Emergency room. Car accident.” Sir Dean started talking in fragments. “Kulang sa doctor so they asked us to attend the others. They are all suffering from third degree burns and .. and fractures, and concussions. The boy and his father survived. But .. but the mother  and the daughter ..” Sir Dean’s voice started to shake and tears started to fall again from his eyes. “It’s .. It’s like I was looking at my mom and Alex. And they died. They died all over again. In front of me. Right before my eyes. It’s just … I .. I couldn’t take it and ..” He trailed off and he buried his head again between his hands and cried.

My heart cringed at the sight of him like that. I fully understand that it’s hard for him to see such a scenario knowing that he didn’t accept his mother and Alex’s death right away. I just hugged him tight. “It’ll be alright, Ricky. It will be, okay?” I comforted him. I guess that’s the best way that I could do to help. “Tayo ka muna dyan. Dun tayo sa couch mo, malamig kasi sa sahig eh.” I gently said. He just nodded his head and I assisted him until we reached his couch. I laid him down, with his head on my lap, even though it’s against his will. I took his hand in mine and for a second he just stared at it. “Matulog ka muna, okay? Sobrang stressed ka kasi kaya sobra ‘yung nagging epekto sa’yo.” I said.

I felt his hands tighten around my hold. He turned sideways and faced me. “Don’t leave me.” He muttered.

I tried to curl up a bit and kissed his head. “I won’t.” I replied and just by doing that, he immediately fell asleep. The door to his office suddenly opened revealing Sir Ryan with a plate of food on his hands.

“Is he okay?” He asked. Sir Mar and Ma’am Ched are behind him and they locked the door after everyone is already inside.

“Parang hindi pa.” I just replied. Sir Dean is still holding my hand tight as I used my other hand to run it through his hair.

“What happened ba?” Sir Mar asked.

“Hindi po nya nakwento nang buo pero parang sa ospital po nangyari eh. May nasugod daw pong pamilya sa emergency room gawa po ng car crash. Eh dahil may shortage daw po ng doctor, sila ‘yung nag asikaso. Naligtas naman daw po yung tatay saka yung anak na lalaki kaso ‘yung babae saka ‘yung nanay, hindi po.” I explained. “Mukhang sa pagod na rin po ni Sir Dean, parang nakita po niya na ‘yung mom nya at si Alex ‘yung hindi nya nasagip.”

“Yan talagang batang ‘yan o.”

“I’ve been telling that to him. Matagal na Ched. Wala naman sa kanya ‘yung desisyon eh. I think Richard still wants to be here kahit na nahihirapan siya.” Sir Mar explained. “Di bale, I’ll talk to him again. I know he’ll be worried when he finds out na nagkaganito ang anak nya.”

“I already texted Tito Roberto, Tito Mar. Kahit ako nagulat eh. First time kong makita si Lim na ganito.” Sir Ryan said. Then he took out the phone from his pocket when it beeped. “Tito asked if we could bring Lim sa bahay nila.” He said.

“Hayaan muna siguro natin syang matulog Sir Ryan. Baka sumpungin na naman ‘to kapag nagising eh.” I suggested.

“Well, Maya has a point.” Sir Mar said. “Is Robert in his office?”

“Oo ata Tito. Nung dumaan ako kanina, nandoon naman ‘yung sasakyan niya.” Sir Ryan answered.

“Puntahan ko muna. I’m sure, nag-aalala na ‘yon.” Sir Mar said and stood up. “Good thing Maya’s here.” He added before he closed the door.

“Maiba ako, Maya. Kayo na ba ni Richard?” Ma’am Ched asked with a smile on her face.

“Nako sinasabi ko na nga ba at itatanong niyo yan Tita.” Sir Ryan quickly said. “You need to answer her, Maya or else, hindi ka talaga tatantanan niyan.”

I just gave Ma’am Ched a smile. “Hindi pa po.” I replied.

Ma’am Ched just gave me a teasing smile and she turned to look at Sir Ryan who is already laughing. “Hay, Maya. Richard could be a very difficult man. I guess it’s because he shielded everything para hindi na siya masaktan. He was so close to his family, lalo na sa mom and to his Ate. And I couldn’t really blame him nung nagkaganyan sya. They are his world and then suddenly, the both of them are gone. He guarded everything in his life. But .. I can already see that you’re someone who can easily go through that wall he built around him. And I’m happy that Richard finally let someone enter his life.”

I just smiled at Ma’am Ched and then my eyes went back to the Dean sleeping on my lap. His hands are still entwined on mine and he’s holding unto it so tight like he doesn’t want to let go. After all I’ve been through with him, after all he’s done for me, and after what Ma’am Ched said, I knew deep down in my heart, I also don’t want to let go.

Wherever You Will Go 28

Chapter 28

It is Wednesday morning and I’m already in school. My classes doesn’t start until one in the afternoon. I am sitting on one of the chairs in the canteen when yy phone beeped. I saw that Eds sent a text.

Maya, malapit na kami sa school. Nandyan na ba ‘yung friend mo?

I hit the reply button and said that he’s not here yet. After the message was sent, my phone rang. A smile flew on my face as I saw that particular name that really makes my heart flutter.

“Good morning Ricky!” I said quickly after I pressed the answer button.

“Well someone’s in a good mood even though it’s too early.” He said on the other line but I could also imagine that he’s smiling.

“Sino bang nagset ng 7:30 ng umaga?” I mocked.

He sighed. “You and I both know that I have to be in the hospital by ten.” He said.

“Pumayag ka pa kasi. Sabi ko sa’yo, pwede namang ‘wag na.” I explained.

“I already said yes didn’t I?” he replied. “It’s a good thing din, I guess.” He added.

“Ha? Bakit naman?” I asked.

“So I could see you.” He answered. I bit my lower lip. I could feel the kilig flowing in me. “Where are you by the way? Palabas na ko ng bahay.”

“Nasa canteen, Ricky. Parating pa lang din sina Eds.” I replied.

“Alright. Bibilisan ko na para may kasama ka na.” He said and yet again, my heart fluttered. “I’ll hang up now. Bye.” He said and then the phone ended.

I sighed with a smile. The events of our date kept on playing in repeat inside my head.

“Your turn.” He said. “Pang ilan na ‘to? Tenth?” He asked. After eating, he took out a pillow from the bag and we lay down to watch the stars. I was the one who suggested we play 21 questions so that I can truly get to know him.

“Uhm, nakakailang girlfriend ka na?” I asked with a smile.

He turned to look at me with his eyes narrowed. “Two. But do I have to count the women I also dated?” He asked. “Madami eh.”

“Ang yabang talaga nito.” I replied.

“Gwapo kasi eh.” He replied. “Okay, my turn. How long were you and Simon together?” He asked.

“Kami na around 3rd year college ako. So bale four years. ” I answered. “Bakit mo natanong?” I asked.

“Counted ‘yang question mong ‘yan ha.” He replied and I chuckled. “Wala lang. At first I thought na kung ilan mang taon ‘yung meron kayo, hihigitan ko. Then I realized something.” He said. I turned my head to look at him and so did he. “I’m planning to be with you forever. There’s nothing greater than that.” He said with a smile.

“Ewan ko sa’yo.” I just replied and I turned to my side so that my back is facing him. I don’t want him to see how red my cheeks are. “Saka walang forever ‘di ba?”

“Kinilig ka lang eh.” I heard him say. “My next question would be, pwede ka bang bumalik sa posisyon mo kanina?”

“Paano kung ayoko?” I replied.

“Then I’ll rephrase.” He replied. I waited for what he’s going to say but the silence kept on going. I finally turned to my side to check on him. “Gotcha.”

“Ang kulit mo Sir Dean.” I said and we both chuckled. “My turn.” I said. “Hm. Ah. Are you still up sa pagtutor kina Eds?”

“I forgot about that.” He replied. “Are they free tomorrow?”

“Bukas agad?” I replied.

“Yes. Well, may long tests na ulit next week. But I have to be in school around 10 in the morning.” He replied. “Maybe around 7:30? Kaya ko na siguro ‘yon.”

“Okay. I’ll call them later.” I said. “Pero kung 7AM nga, Ricky, dapat siguro umuwi na tayo. Gabi na rin eh.” I said.

“I guess so.” He said and he stood up. The two of us packed the things and said goodbye to his parents and sister. We kept on playing once we’re on the road.

“Gusto mong magkape muna Ricky?” I asked when he opened the passenger’s door for me

“No it’s okay. Next time na lang siguro.” He replied. “I had fun. And thank you again. I kinda felt that you were creeped out when I brought you in a cemetery.”

“Nung una.” I said. “But I am glad that I’ve met your mom. At syempre, mapasalamatan nang personal si Alex. Ang ganda kaya nung damit niya.”

“Mas maganda ka.” He quickly said.

“Ay tama na ‘yan. Binobola mo na ko.” I said with a huge smile on my face. I took a glance in our chibugan and I saw Nanay and Kute watching the two of us. The latter was wearing a huge smile on her face while Nanay looks oblivious. “Mukhang may viewers agad tayo.” I muttered.

Sir Dean followed my gaze. “Ah, g-good evening po. Hinatid ko lang po si Maya.” He said to them.

“Mukhang uulanin ako ng tanong pagpasok ko ah.” I said. “Sige na Ricky. Umuna ka na para makapagpahinga ka na rin.”

He nodded. “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He said. After that, he leaned in and kissed my cheek. “Goodnight.”

“Good morning!” A voice said. A man sat beside me and a thermos bottle was placed on the table, in front of me.

“Good morning Ricky!” I greeted back. “Ano ‘to?”

“Coffee.” He answered shortly. “I have a feeling na puyat ka.” He added and yes, he is right. Kute and Nanay kept on asking me questions if Sir Dean is already my boyfriend because of that kiss. But that is not the real reason. I kept on tossing and turning in my bed because of that. It stirred up something in me. “I’m sorry if I created a fuss over that .. that kiss. I only realized it when I was driving home.”

“You’re .. you’re sorry?” I asked.

“Yes. Well, I’m not sorry that I kissed you.” He said with a sly smile on his face.

“Maya! Good morning!” A voice called from behind, making both of us to look back. “Ay, good morning po Sir Santelices.” Emman quickly said. “Nako Maya, buti na lang wala pa ‘yung friend mo. Si Eds kasi, tinanghali ng gising. Ang tagal kong naghintay sa lobby.” He said as the two of them sat on the opposite side of the table.

“Sorry talaga, Maya.” Eds apologized. “Good morning po Sir Santelices.” She greeted the man beside me. Then Eds looked back at me. Both her and Emman’s eyes seemed to ask why Sir Dean is with us.

“Actually Emman,” I started. “Si .. Si Sir Santelices ‘yung friend ko.” I said. Both of my friends’ jaws dropped.

“Unfortunately, yes.” Sir Dean said. “Well, good morning to you two. Should we start? May lakad pa kasi ako ng 10.” He said. Both of them just nodded without any word said. “Don’t be shy to ask questions. And can we .. can we keep it a secret that I did a tutorial? Sikreto lang kasi dapat ‘yung pagtuturo ko eh. Eh since madaldal ‘yung kaibigan niyo, hindi na ko nagtaka.”

“Ikaw ha. Ayan ka na naman.” I said and I slapped his arm. I went still after. Wrong move, Maya. But I couldn’t seem to help it. I’m already comfortable in his presence but then I still remembered that I have my friends here who doesn’t need to know that there’s something going on between us.

Sir Dean just chuckled and then turned on Eds and Emman. “So. San kayo nahihirapan? Is it the way I teach? Masyado bang mabilis?”

“S-Sakto lang po Sir.” Emman answered. “Mas mabilis pa nga po ‘yung relasyon niyo ni Maya eh.” He softly added and I saw Eds nudged him. Sir Dean and I just exchanged looks. It’s going to be a long day.

At around 9:30, Sir Dean wrapped up his lessons. I do understand that he can’t be late for his class. I just hope that Eds and Emman learned a lot instead of gawking at Sir Dean.

“I really need to go. Sorry kung maikli lang. I did my best to compress all of the topics.” He said.

“Ayos lang po Sir. Maliwanag na po ‘yung topics.” Emman said with a smile. “Thank you po ulit.”

“Ay Sir, ibabalik na po ba ‘yung test papers mamaya? Para po ma-review, if ever.” Eds asked.

“Yes. Dadaan ako ng faculty para mabigay kay Ma’am Ched. I’ll be busy this afternoon. I’m afraid I can’t attend class.” He said. “Maya, I’ll take this. Medyo inaantok ako eh.” He said, pertaining to the coffee thermos.

“Okay lang Sir Dean. Ingat kayo.” I replied. “Thank you ulit.”

Sir Dean opened his mouth to say something but it looks like he second-guessed it. “You’re welcome.” He said then his eyes glanced at my friends. “I’ll be going.” He said and then left. I watched him leave as he dissapeared from my view. When I looked back, Emman and Eds are looking at me.

“Maya ha. ‘Di ka man lang nagsasabi na kaibigan mo pala si Sir.” Eds said.

“Eh kasi baka sabihin niyo, bias, may favoritism.” I quickly replied. I’ve been expecting this kind of questions from them so I already prepared answers last night. “Saka part-time professor naman kasi ako dito sa PUS. Syempre iisang faculty lang naman ‘di ba?” I answered.

The two of them exchanged looks. “Pwede na. Acceptable answer. Pero may something fishy pa rin eh. May naaamoy akong iba.” Emman said.

“Pagkain ‘yon, Emman. Gutom ka na kasi.” I quickly said.

“Ay truelili girl. Hindi ako kumain para sa tutorial na itey. Ang aga naman kasi.” Emman answered. “Gusto niyong kumain tayo sa labas? May dala naman akong sasakyan. Saka mamaya pa namang 1PM ang class. Ano? Tarey?”

“May klase ka ba Eds?” I asked.

“Wala akong class, Maya. Tara? Gutom na rin ako eh. Tubig lang laman ng tyan ko.” She answered.

We made our way to Emman’s car which is just parked near the canteen. I sat on the backseat and Emman drove as they kept on talking about Sir Dean’s tutorial.

“Pero infairness, ang gwapo talaga ni Sir Richard! Tapos nagjo-joke pa. Ang gwapo!” Emman exclaimed. “Muntik na kong hindi makapagsalita kanina. Ang gwapo niya nang malapitan, girl!”

I just laughed as Eds joined in with Emman’s fangirling. My phone beeped and to my surprise, it came from Sir Dean.

I was going to say na I’d do anything for you, then I remembered that they know nothing. Anyway, I’m already here in the hospital. Saan kayo?

I couldn’t help but smile as I read his text. Nasa kotse kami ni Emman. Kakain lang kami ng brunch.

Almost instantly, my phone beeped again. Okay. Ingat kayo. Did they learn something though? Parang nakatitig lang kasi sila sa’kin.

Nastarstruck lang ‘yon. Di kasi makapaniwalang ikaw ‘yung kaibigan ko. I replied.

Kaibigan nga ba? 😉

His last message made me mum. Is he really just my friend? Or maybe something new is emerging from all of this.

“Mahal ka non, Maya.” A voice said and I just sighed. Then it hit me. I quickly lifted my head and saw that Eds is looking at me while I can see Emman’s eyes looking at me through the rear mirror.

“So what’s really the deal with you and Mr. Santelices, Maya?” Emman asked.

“Emman, magkaibigan nga lang kami.” I replied. Then I looked at my phone. He sent another text. Class is already in session. Take care.

“Emman, pustahan tayo.” Eds said. “Ang pusta ko, sila na si Sir Santelices.”

“Ganyan din ang pusta ko Eds eh.” Emman said with a laugh. “Alam ko na. Si Mayabells ang kalabanin natin. Since nag iinsist siya na hindi sila.” He said.

“Teka teka. Dapat may timeframe!” I quickly said.

“Mukhang ngayon pa lang panalo na tayo Emman.” Eds said. “Sige. By end of term. Malapit na naman eh. Finals na.”

“Ay girl. Deal ako.” Emman said. “Manlilibre ha.” He added. “Tara na. Nandito na tayo.” He said as he turned the engine off.

“Wait Emman, may tanong pa ko kay Maya.” Eds said. “Gusto mo na bang manlibre ngayon?”

“Hay nako, tara na. Kumain na tayo. Kayo talaga. Bahala kayo, hindi ko na ulit hihingan ng pabor si Sir Dean.” I just said.

“Eds, may tinatanong ka ba? Wala na akong naririnig kundi yung kulo ng tyan ko. Tara na nga.” Emman said and I just laughed. We got out of the car and entered the fast food chain. I quickly reached for my phone.

We’re already here! (:

Wherever You Will Go 27

Chapter 27

It is just an ordinary day. I’ve been telling that to myself a thousand times even though my heart refuses to slow down its beating rate. I might even be suffering high blood pressure. “Maya, ang kulit mo.” I muttered. The day passed so quickly and I’m now on my way to teach my last class. The next one would be the most awaited class that I accidentally agreed to substitute.

My students are just going to take their long quiz and they could go afterwards. I don’t really need to do any lectures. So while they answer their papers, I’m sitting in front, reading my notes for my own long test in Sir Dean’s class. It’s funny though. In every topic that I read, I could almost hear Sir Dean’s voice in my head as if he’s having his own lecture there. I even told this to Kute last night when she went inside my room to bring me coffee. And guess what she said?

Masyado mo kasi siyang iniisip, bunso.

Am I? Am I really thinking about him that much? Well, I guess. But mostly it’s because of what he revealed last night. He asked for coexistence of us existing as friends without this student-teacher relationship. I do respect that. But what I cannot forget is when he said that he is not going to court me, yet. Am I ready to have another relationship? I know that Sir Dean is a busy man. What if our relationship ends up just like what I had with Simon? And am I allowed to date our Dean? Let alone my own Professor?

“Ma’am, may I ask a question?” A voice brought me back from my thoughts. I was actually glad that someone did. I thought my head was going to explode from all of those thoughts. I looked around the room and saw that it’s Edward, the boy who has an unusual liking to me.

“Yes?” I asked back.

“Break na po ba kayo ng boyfriend niyo?” He suddenly asked. The whole class turned their heads at me and then all of them laughed. “What? I am curious!” He added.

“Alright, settle down please.” I said and when the laughter died down I added, “Only questions about the exam, please.”

“Ma’am, sagutin niyo na rin.” A student said.

I rolled my eyes at them. “Ano bang makukuha niyo sa love life ko? Maisasagot niyo ba ‘yan sa exam?” I asked and I just got a soft laughter as my reply. I kept on observing since I think this is a way for me be distracted so that students will be able to cheat. “I’ll answer sa next class natin. For now please focus muna on your exam, and eyes on your own paper please.” I loudly said as I saw a few kids at the back asking each other for answers. Good thing that they stopped after that.

I made my way to Ms. Belmonte’s class right away since I don’t have any breaks after my previous class. It’s in the first floor, just beside my room in Sir Dean’s class. I made my way to the table and placed my things. “This is BIO31?” I asked the class and some nodded. “Ms. Belmonte is on leave, so I will be the substitute teacher for today in Genetics.” I said and I could clearly hear my heart hammer.

I took a deep breath as the students opened their notebooks and grabbed their pens. Just remember the way you told the lecture last night to Ricky. I told myself. My cellphone beeped and even though we’re not able to use cellphones during class, I took it out for a peek. It’s from Sir Dean.

Good luck on your lecture! Kaya mo ‘yan. Kwentuhan mo ako mamaya.

A smile flew across my face. I took a deep breath again and opened the lid of my marker. “So let’s start.” I said and I just rolled with it.

“That’s it for today. Thank you for listening.” I said with a smile as the students started packing up. I did well, I think. I was asked a few questions but I was able to answer with full confidence. I don’t know why but during my lecture, I could almost hear Sir Dean in my head.

“Ma’am thank you po sa lecture.” A student said. “Sana po kayo na lang ‘yung prof namin for genetics.” She kindly said. “Ano po bang schedule niyo? Baka po pwede kaming mag-sit in.”

“Ay thank you rin. Pero believe it or not, this is actually the first time that I taught genetics. Sana may naintindihan kayo. Feeling ko kasi ang gulo ng turo ko.” I kindly replied.

“Nako Ma’am, naintindihan po namin nang sobra.” Her friend butted in. “Si Ma’am Zenaida po kasi mabilis magturo. Naiintindihan naman po namin, kaso ang hirap pong maabsorb agad. ‘Yung sa inyo po sakto eh.” She said.

“Ganon ba?” I asked with a smile. “Pero alam ko namang kaya niyo ‘yan. Tamang intindi lang ‘yan at review.” I replied. They said thanks again and bid their farewell. I sighed in relief. I couldn’t be happier in hearing their comments.

“Ma’am Maya!” A familiar voice said. “Ang galing niyo pong magturo ah!”

“Niccolo!” I replied with a smile. He approached me with three guys behind him. I think they’re his friends. “Estudyante pala kita. Hindi ko napansin.”

“Syempre Ma’am, behave ‘to kapag nasa class.” He said with a huge smile. “Pero seryoso, Ma’am Maya. Naintindihan ko talaga lahat.” He said. “Pero ‘yung tropa ko medyo hindi nila nagets eh.”

“Ha? Bakit naman? May gusto ba silang itanong? Ayos lang. May time pa naman ako.” I said to him and to his friends.

“Masyado atang nagandahan sa’yo Ma’am eh.” Niccolo said and his friends quickly covered his mouth and pulled him away from me. I couldn’t  help but laugh. “Nako Ma’am, ngumiti pa kayo, lalong maiin-love -” He added but got interrupted by his friends again. “Guys, kumalma tayo. Okay na. Wala na kong ibabanat.” He announced.

“Ma’am, pagpasensyahan niyo na ‘tong si Niccolo. May sayad talaga ‘to eh.” His friend said.

“I’m well aware sa kakulitan niyan.” I replied.

“Sabi sa’yo close kami ni Ma’am Maya eh.” Niccolo replied. “Ma’am Maya, may lakad ka mamaya? Libre kita sa amin.” He said.

“Ay pwedeng next time muna? May .. may lakad kami ng Kuya Ricky mo eh.” I replied.

“Ang bilis talaga ni Kuya Richard. Sige Ma’am, pinapaubaya na kita kay Kuya.” He said with a huge smile. “Pero sure ako, kung nakita ka lang niya kanina na nagtuturo? Lalong maiinlove ‘yon.” He said. “Tara na guys. Wala kayong pag-asa dyan kay Ma’am Maya. Ang papangit niyo kasi.” He said and ran outside followed by his friends.

I made my way to the faculty to get my things and went back to the classroom for Sir Dean’s class. I’m still a bit early so I laid my head on my table and closed my eyes. It’s been a long day. A few minutes later, my classmates entered the room. Eds sat beside me and we just chatted until Sir Dean entered the room. He was carrying a stack of papers which contains our exam.

“If you’re finished, you may go.” He announced as he distributed the papers. When his eyes found mine, I lifted my hand a bit and gave him a thumbs up. He suddenly smiled and I could feel my heart hammer again.

“Maya, ang gwapo talaga ni Sir Santelices.” Eds muttered beside me. I found myself smiling. Well for starters, he is handsome.

The exams were done after two hours. Sir Dean left while most of us are still chatting on how hard the exams were. It was really complicated. But I managed to answer all of them. i just wished I don’t fail.

“Maya, we’re having dinner. Gusto mong sumama?” Eds asked.

“Pass muna ako Eds. May lakad din kasi ako eh.” I informed her.

“Ay Maya! Sorry kung out of the blue pero kaya ba ‘yung tutorial?” Emman asked with a worried face. “Hindi kasi talaga kinaya ng beauty ko itong exam na ‘to.”

“Update ko kayo, okay? I’ll just ask him later. Magkikita naman kami.” I just said.

“So siya ang kasama mo mamaya.” Eds slowly said with a teasing smile.

“And take note Eds, ‘him’ ang gamit ni Maya.” Emman added. The two of them exchanged looks and chuckled. “Tara na nga, Eds, baka makaistorbo pa tayo sa date ni Mayabells.” And before they could even protest, they quickly got outside the room.

I just sighed. Is this really a date?

I made my way to the faculty and saw Sir Ryan sitting on my desk. “There you are!” He said when he saw me. “Here’s the invitation for my son’s birthday. It’ll be on Saturday, Maya. I hope you can come. Raffi’s excited to meet you.” He said with a smile. I thanked Sir Ryan for the invitation then he gave me another envelope. “Kay Lim.” He said. “Pakibigay na lang.”

“Ha? Eh Sir nandyan lang naman si Sir Dean eh. Pwede namang kayo na lang ang -“

“Let’s go?” A voice said and Sir Dean emerged from his office. I was surprised by what he said then I noticed that we’re the only ones in the faculty.

“Lim told me you two have a date.” Sir Ryan said. “And I need to go. See you. And Lim, ihatid mo si Maya sa kanila ha?” He said and left.

“What’s up with him?” Sir Dean muttered as he stood beside me.

“Ay pinabibigay niya.” I said and handed him the invitation.

“Are you going?” He asked as he opened the envelope and read what’s inside.

“Malalaman pa.” I replied. I don’t really know if I should go. I am afraid that I will know no one there.

“Well, if .. if you’re not going, then I’m not going.” Sir Dean said and I just gave him a confused look. “Wala naman akong kilala don eh. Sure, Ryan and Raffi but they’ll be preoccupied. I have no one to talk to.”

I laughed at him after I heard him speak. “Alam mo, Ricky, ‘yan din ang iniisip ko eh.” I said.

“O ‘di ba?” He replied with a smile. “Pupunta ka na?” He asked.

“Okay. I’ll go.” I replied.

“Great. I’ll pick you up sa bahay niyo.” He replied.”Ah, no buts, Ms. Dela Rosa.” He quickly said and I just sighed.

“You’re the boss.” I replied.

“Boss na ginagamit mo.” He muttered. My jaw dropped and I lifted both of my hands to hit him. Sir Dean stopped it by holding both of my hands with his.

What happened next was a blur.

I don’t know what happened. In just a matter of seconds, my hands were around his torso and his arms are around me, just below my neck and I could feel his chin rested on my head. I could feel him tighten his embrace around me and I did the same. It was just so comfortable to be in his arms.

“Congratulations on your success earlier.” He whispered. “Pwede mo na ba akong palitan as a professor?”

I chuckled softly. “Thank you. Pero hindi pa. I still have a long way to go.” I muttered back. We just hugged each other in comfortable silence until I decided to let go. We smiled at each other foolishly before I spoke, “Tara na.” Ricky just gave me a smile as a response. “I was thinking na dun na lang tayo-“

“Ah, I already have a plan.” Ricky interrupted. “I hope you don’t mind.”

“Ricky, bakit .. bakit tayo nasa sementeryo?” I asked. I have complete faith in him in our celebration but I am horrified when we entered the gates of a cemetery. “Maggo-ghost hunting ba tayo?” I asked when he opened the passenger’s door for me.

“No, silly.” He replied and then sighed. “I know this is not the ideal place for a first date but .. you’ll see.” He said. I just nodded and got out of his car.

Sir Dean went to his car’s trunk and took out three bouquets. He walked a bit and reached two tombstones and placed the flower in each. I went beside him and that’s when I saw the names engraved on them.

Esmeralda S. Lim and Alexandria S. Lim

“Hi Mom. Hey Alex.” Ricky muttered. “I brought a friend. Well, she’s sort of a special friend. Her name is Maya. She’s a student and a colleague of mine.” He said. I could feel the tears welling up my eyes. “Here, these are for you.” He said and when I looked at him, he is handing me the other bouquet. This one is different. The one he placed on the tombstones were roses and mine are sunflowers. “Stay here.” Sir Dean said and he went back to the trunk of his car and grabbed a duff-el bag and a basket. He opened the bag and grabbed a picnic blanket and laid it on the ground. He patted on the area beside him so I sat down. We shared silence for a bit until he spoke again.

“It’s my mother and my sister.” He said. “They died ten years ago.” He simply said. I could feel his voice trembling so I wrapped my arm around his and he looked at me with a smile. “I know this is unusual, Maya. But .. like I said, I just really want you to know me.”

“I understand.” I replied. For once, I can see how vulnerable Sir Dean is. Even after ten years, I could still feel the hurt that has built up inside him. “Ah, Tita Esmeralda, nice to meet you po. And to you too, Alex. Salamat sa pagpapahiram mo sa’kin ng damit nung nakatulog ako kina Ricky. Sana nakilala kita dati. Feeling ko magkakasundo tayo sa fashion eh.” I said and I heard Ricky chuckle.

“Yes. Magkakasundo kayo ni Alex.” He replied and then I heard him took a deep breath. He reached for the basket and took out containers of food. “I asked Manang to prepare this for us. And I want to tell you that she is very happy to oblige.” He said.

I chuckled and grabbed the paper plates and start putting food in it. I gave it to Ricky. “Kain ka na. Feeling ko nagugutom ka na kaya ang drama mo bigla eh.” I teased and he just shook his head with a smile.

“If Alex was here? Magkakaisa kayo sa pang aasar sa’kin.” He replied.

I was finished putting food in my plate when I looked at the tombstones again. “Ricky, paano sila ..” I trailed off. I was really not in the position to ask questions about it but I was surprised that he replied.

“Car crash. Well, actually, someone shot them before that.” Ricky replied. “My .. my Dad, he was involved in some issue before. That’s when Alex and I decided to use my Mom’s maiden name to ensure our safety. We all received death threats. But then one night I received the news that changed my life. Alex was driving that night with my Mom. They’re on their way home and then someone shot the two of them and then the car crashed. They were declared dead on arrival and up until now, hindi pa rin nahuhuli ‘yung pumatay sa kanila.” Ricky explained. “After that, I shut everyone out of my life. I only talk to those who I trusted. And I know that you can see how I treat everyone around me.”

Ricky was just looking at the tombstones the whole time he told me the story. I know that he can’t still accept the fact that his family was broken apart by a man who is still out there. My heart cringed. He is doing all of this for me and I don’t really deserve it. I placed my plate on the ground and moved myself closer to him. I wrapped my arm around him again. “I’m sorry. Alam kong ginagawa mo ‘to para ipakilala sa’kin kung sino ka. I appreciate all of it. But I don’t think I deserve it when it’s giving you too much heartache.” I replied.

“It’s okay. Gusto kong gawin ‘to. And thank you for being here with me tonight.” He replied and I felt his head on top of mine. “I want to do it for you.” He said and I felt him kiss the top of my head. “Enough about me. How was your day?”

I couldn’t help but smile because of what he did. “Believe it or not, my students actually prefer me than Ms. Belmonte.” I replied.

“Really? I am actually surprised na naintindihan nila ‘yung mga pinagsasasabi mo. At naniwala pa sila ha.” Sir Dean replied.

“Ang sama mo talaga.” I replied with a smile. “Syempre, magaling ‘yung nagturo eh.”

“And who could that be, I wonder.” He replied.

I leaned back to get a good look at his face. “Sino pa? Edi ‘yung poging pogi kong Sir Dean!” I replied as I pinched his cheek.

“Aw, Maya! Stop that!” He replied with a huge smile on his face. I smiled back. That’s just what I wanted to see. “Thank you. For .. for everything.”

Sir Dean nodded. “You’re welcome. Kumain na tayo.” He replied. “Anyway, tell me more! ‘Yun lang? Wala bang bloopers para marinig ni Mom and ni Alex kung gaano ka ka-clumsy?” He comically asked.

“Tita, Alex, I’m proud to say na wala akong clumsy moment ngayong araw na ‘to.” I said with a smile. “Ah, si Niccolo pala, student ko sya kanina!” I exclaimed. “Kilala ba nila si Niccolo?” Sir Dean just smiled at me and nodded. “Alam niyo po, kahit si Niccolo, nagalingan sa’kin. Pwedeng pwede na raw akong maging professor sa genetics!” I said then I looked back at Sir Dean. He is still smiling back at me. I felt my heart flutter. I do hope we can always be like this.

Chapter 26

“I’ll be uploading an activity later in the school’s online class. I’ll be dismissing you early due to matters I must attend.” The Dean said. It is exactly 7:30 and he really did keep his word. “Class dismissed.” He said. With that, all of the students started clearing their desks.

“Ay, Maya.” Eds called. She has been one of my few friends in this class. Like me, she is also a part-time professor but in another university. “Congrats nga pala for getting the highest grade dun sa problem set natin. Ang galling mo pala sa genetics!” She greeted.

“Nako Eds, magaling lang ‘yung nagturo sa’kin. Hindi ko rin talaga kasi maintindihan ‘yan nung una eh.” I replied as I placed my things in my bag.

“Buti naman nagkaron na ng time sa’yo ‘yang boyfriend mo! Hay, mga lalaki talaga oh.” She quickly replied.

“Ay ano Eds, hindi siya ‘yung nagturo sa’kin eh.” I replied. “Saka, ano, break na kami.”

“Omg! Are you serious?” She gasped. “Well, I can’t really blame you. Masasabi ko pa ngang tama ‘yung desisyon mo eh.” She continued. “Anyway, sinong nagturo sa’yo?”

“A friend.” I shortly replied but I think it’s still a giveaway since she teasingly looked at me.

“Fine. Pero Maya, kung pwede lang, pwede ba kaming magpaturo ni Emman before exams next week? Alam mo namang mahirap si Doc Santelices magpa-exam. If pwede sana, sa friend mo na rin.” She said.

“Nako Eds, titignan ko ha? Busy din kasi ‘yon.” I just replied. She thanked me and then left. I wonder what their reaction would be if they found out that my tutor is actually the one giving the exams. I bet they would freak out.

I was the only student left inside the room and Sir Dean is still at front, sitting on the table like he was waiting for something. When the door clicked after Eds left, he stood up and met his gaze with mine.

“Shall we go?” He asked as he swung the strap of his backpack to his shoulder.

“Hinihintay mo pala ako Sir Dean. Sorry, medyo nagkakwentuhan kami ni Eds.” I replied as I made my way to the front.

“Ano bang pinag-usapan niyo?” He asked.

“She just congratulated me for getting the highest score dun sa problem set.” I humbly replied while Sir Dean smirked.

“Magaling ‘yung nagturo sa’yo eh.” He proudly said.

I quickly slapped his arm at his remark. “Ang yabang talaga nito.” I said. “Kaso, ayun nga ‘yung problema. Nagpapaturo sila sa’kin. Pero sabi ni Eds, kung pwede raw, dun sa tutor ko magpaturo.” I explained. “Hindi ko lang alam kung papayag ‘yung Dean na mag-tutor.”

“That would actually be complicated.” He replied as he scratched the back of his head. “It would be unfair to the other students if they found out. Marereport ako. And eventually, my Dad would be mad.” He explained and I nodded. “Why don’t you teach them what I taught you?”

“Mas malinaw ka kasing magturo eh.” I said. “Hindi bola ‘yan ha.” I added.

He smiled back at me and then he sighed. “Is it important to you na maturuan sila? Your friends I mean.”

I nodded. “Oo, in some ways. Kasi sila lang dalawa ‘yung naging kaibigan ko talaga throughout my masters. Lalo na si Emman. Kaibigan ko pa sya nung bs bio days ko. Minsan nga nakikitulog pa ko sa condo non kapag may mga activities kami.”

“You slept in a man’s condo?” Sir Dean quickly asked and his brows are now furrowed.

“Oo!” I replied. “Ay technically hindi sya ‘man’, Ricky. Emman’s gay and he’s a close friend ng family ko.” I explained.

Sir Dean seemed to sigh in relief. “Okay, I will try to fit in my schedule kung gusto nilang magpaturo –“

“Ay nako Ricky, kahit wag na. Aabalahin ka pa naming. Alam ko namang busy ka rin.” I interrupted.

“Susubukan ko pa lang naman, Maya eh.” Sir Dean argued. “And I’m not doing it for them. I’m doing it for you.” He said with a smile and then walked away, leaving me and my fluttered heart. “I’ll be in my car. Mamaya-maya ka sumunod. I’m sorry but I can’t be seen yet with a fellow student.” He said and left the room.

I leaned on the table and placed a hand on my loudly-beating heart. Why is he being so nice to me? Was there something that I did? Him offering tutorial for my class tomorrow is already a big deal. He even dismissed the class early for that, so I could go home in time.

Could it be that ..

“Haayy Maya. Wag muna. Erase erase. Wag ka munang mag-assume at mag-conclude. I-enjoy mo na muna ang nangyayari sa paligid mo. Priorities muna tayo ha?” I spoke out loud to calm myself. I’m starting to get paranoid again.

The tutorial went right away as soon as we arrived in his house. I took every pointer that I could as Sir Dean kept on writing a lot of things in the white board that I didn’t notice that was there before. He discussed the idea of central dogma, what it is for, the perks, the parts, and now he is starting to discuss the three major phases – DNA Replication, Transcription and Translation. Even though I was told to only discuss the first phase, Sir Dean insisted on teaching the rest since I should also be prepared.

“Did you understand?” He asked and I nodded. I do understand. I just hope I still understand everything tomorrow. “How about this?” He asked as he walked towards me and stopped when he’s finally in front of me and laid the marker from his hand. “Go teach me the process of central dogma.” He said. “I won’t take buts. You need this.” He said.

I sighed and grabbed the marker from his hand. I walked in front and erased all of the things that he wrote and then I started talking. I didn’t exactly say everything like Sir Dean, but I incorporated my own style to what I learned. I could see the look of satisfaction on Sir Dean’s face as he watch me from the couch, where I was sitting earlier.

“Maya, letter C is Cytosine, not Cysteine. Cysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid. Cytosine is the nitrogenous base.” He corrected at some point. I took a mental note of that. And I know for sure I would remember it because it was corrected.

After my discussion, Sir Dean walked to the board and laid out his palm. I gave him the marker and he took the lid off. “Here’s a DNA sequence. Kindly perform the three phases of central dogma.” He said and went back to his seat. “Please include the enzymes and where the process undergo.” He added.

I erased the writings on the board except for the sequence. I started writing down my answers and in a short amount of time, I already finished answering. “Tama Ricky?” I asked.

“It’s correct.” He said as he raised a piece of paper where his solution is. “Okay, trick question. What chemical bond would be broken in the process of replication?” He asked.

“That would be the hydrogen bond since it is the weakest bond.” I confidently answered. He continued to ask five more and after that he stood up.

“I think you’re ready.” He said with a smile. “Papasa ka nang Professor for Genetics.”

“Magaling ‘yung nagturo eh.” I replied and he just chuckled.

“You better nail that discussion tomorrow. If not, mapapahiya ako.” He replied. “Let’s go downstairs. I think Manang prepared dinner.”

I nodded and took a time check on my watch. It’s already nine in the evening. “Ricky, pwede bang umuna na muna ako? Gabi na kasi eh. Magre-review pa ako kasi may long test bukas sa’yo ‘di ba?”

“Kumain ka muna bago umuwi, okay? I don’t want you passing out sa byahe.” He said. “Besides, I could always cancel the exam if you ask nicely.” He said with a teasing smile.

“Ay, sobra na ‘yan Ricky. Unfair na talaga sa iba.” I replied.

“I know. I’m just observing kung kakagat ka.” He said and laughed. “Now I know, hindi ka talaga user.” He added and I just laughed. “Tara na nga sa baba. I think Dad’s home also.”

I was texting Kute as we made our way downstairs. I told her that I’m with Sir Dean because I needed tutorial for tomorrow’s class. And do you know what her reply is?

Sige lang bunso. Akong bahala kay Nanay. Enjoy kayo ng manok ko. And she added a wink emoji.

“You know, I prefer the RNA bases compared to the DNA.” Ricky said out of the blue.

My eyes narrowed at him. “DNA bases are A,T,C,G while RNA bases are A,C,G and T is replaced by U.” I muttered. “Anong meron don Ricky?” I asked back.

He turned around and faced me with a smile. “Because it has ‘U’ in it.” He said and without waiting for my reaction, he started walking to the dining area.

“Ang corny ha.” I said loudly, enough for him to hear it. But yes. Kinilig ako.

“Kinilig ka lang eh.” He replied and I just blushed. “Ay Dad. Good evening.” He said when he got in the dining area. “Maya’s here.”

I rushed to the dining area and saw Tito Roberto seated with a newspaper on the table. I guess reading runs in the family. “Ay Tito, good evening po.” I said and reached out for his hand for a mano. “Sorry po sa abala.”

“Napapadalas ka ata, Maya.” He said with a smile. “Umupo ka na. Kakain na tayo.” He said.

“Kape, Ricky?” I asked. He was about to say no but then I interrupted. “Okay lang, pambawi ko man lang sa’yo.” I said.

“Alright.” He said. He backed his chair to stand up.

“Dyan ka na. Alam ko na naman kung saan nakalagay ‘yung tasa. Tutulungan ko na rin si Manang.” I said and went to their kitchen.

“It’s okay, Maya. Sabel and Doris came back.” Ricky said.

“Ay Ma’am, ako na ho dyan.” A woman appeared from the other side of the kitchen. She has a full-on bangs. “Oo nga po, Ma’am, umupo na po kayo doon.” Another said. This woman is shorter than the one with the bangs.

“Ah, hindi na. Sige na, tulungan niyo na lang si Manang Fe. Ako na lang dito. Kape lang naman.” I replied with a smile. “Parang hindi ko kayo nakita nung mga nakaraang bisita ko ah.”

“Ay Ma’am, ako po si Sabel, itong may bangs po ay si Doris.” She replied. “Nasa probinsya po kasi kami nung nakaraan. May kinailangan lang pong asikasuhin.” She said.

“Sige po Ma’am, tulungan na po naming si Manang Fe.” Doris said with a huge smile on her face and she kept on pulling Sabel’s arm into the room. As they descend, I could hear their voices muttering, “Girlfriend ‘yan ni Sir!”

I just shook my head. Do people really think of me and Ricky as that? We’re just friends, and on top of all, he is my boss. I put the two cups of coffee on a tray and carried them to the dining area.

“Tito, pinagtimpla ko na rin po kayo.” I said as I placed the coffee on the table.

“Nag-abala ka pa, Maya.” He just said. “What about you? Bakit hindi ka nagtimpla ng iyo?” He asked.

“Mamaya na po sa bahay. Baka po mag all-nighter ako gawa po nang long test ni Ricky.” I honestly said.

“Itong si Ricky, bakit mo naman pinapahirapan ang mga student mo?” Tito Roberto said to his son. “Tapos niyaya mo pa ‘tong si Maya sa bahay.”

“Dad, Maya needs a tutor. She’ll be substituting tomorrow for her most hated subject.” Sir Dean replied with a smile. The story went on again on how I accepted a class without asking what the subject is.

The food was served a few minutes after. I wonder why they have three helpers. Ricky and Tito Roberto are the only ones that live here. Well, I suppose so since they are the only ones that I see in this house. Then there’s the room with a woman’s clothing. I think her name is Alex. And where is Ricky’s mom? Is Tito separated?

That’s when I realized, I know nothing about Sir Dean. There are all this secrets but even though he let me inside his life, I am still not inside.

“Have you met them, Maya?” Tito Roberto asked.

“Ay sino po, Tito?” I replied. I was busy having thoughts that I had no idea what the topic was.

“Sina Doris at Sabel.” He replied. I nodded as my answer. “They are relatives of Fe. Nung .. nung buhay pa ‘yung Mom ni Ricky, we hired them. Eh napapalapit na rin sa’min kaya I asked them to stay kahit na walang masyadong ginagawa sa bahay.” He said. So that’s why. “They are actually studying here in PUS. Both in culinary. Kaya masarap ‘yung mga luto.” Tito continued.

“Pero mas masarap ‘yung luto ni Maya, Dad.” Sir Dean joined in.

“Fe told me!” Tito exclaimed. “Nako, Maya, next time. Uuwi ako ng maaga kapag magluluto ka. Ligawan mo na kasi Ricky.” He added. Both Sir Dean and I went still while the older Lim seemed unaware of what he just said.

“Ang tahimik mo na naman.” Sir Dean said as he stopped on a red light. After dinner, he offered me a ride home and since it’s late, I had no choice but to say yes. “Ayos ka lang ba?”

I just nodded with a smile. “So .. your Mom passed away?” I asked. “It’s okay kung hindi mo sagutin. Sorry, personal ata.” I quickly added.

“It’s okay.” He said then changed gears to drive. “It was years ago.” He just said. Then he didn’t add anything after that. We enjoyed silence until he stopped in front of our house. I was about to get off his car when he called my name.

“Uhm, listen. R-Ryan told me about you and Simon. And .. and I’ve been thinking about what Dad said during dinner, about courting you –“

“P-Pero teacher kita Ricky.” I interrupted. My heart is beating so loud. I can’t believe he’s bringing this up right now.

“Yes I know pero –“

“And I don’t really know who exactly you are.” I continued.

Sir Dean took a deep sigh and nodded. “Yes, I know. But still, you asked for coexistence. And I am asking for one right now. Gusto kong mag exist tayo as .. as tayo, without labels as teacher and student. And I’m not going to court you. Yet. Pero please give me a chance na maipakilala nang buo ‘yung sarili ko. I know that you feel like you don’t actually know me. And I want to change that. I will try my hardest even though I am finding it difficult to open up. I .. I am sorry that I haven’t told you that my mom passed away. Si Dad pa ‘yunag nagsabi. And .. and there’s a reason for that.” He explained and I could see it in his eyes that he is putting so much effort in trying to tell me all of this.  “Can you please give me a chance?”

I looked at him and he looks so honest. I could see it in his eyes that he really wants to do this even though there’s something that is holding him back. I took a deep breath and gave him a smile. “Deal.” I said and a smile formed in his lips. “Gusto ko pang makipagkwentuhan Ricky kaso kailangan ko pa talagang mag-aral eh.” I said.

“I understand.” He replied and with that, I opened the passenger door and got out of the car. “Goodluck tomorrow, Maya. And thank you.”

“Thank you rin Sir Dean. Ingat ka.” I said. “Maybe we could celebrate tomorrow after your class? Or mourn. Depende kung anong magiging resulta ng lecture ko. Libre ko.” I said before he could even leave.

Ricky gave me a smile. “I would love that.” He replied. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Then he left.

A/N:

thoughts? 🙂

I might be gone for the weekend pero itatry ko pa rin pong magsulat. Peroooo baka po by Monday ang 27. Thank you po! Have a great weekend! Happy father’s day po sa mga daddy and hubby niyo!

Wherever You Will Go 25

Chapter 25

Monday came faster than I thought. I just spend most of my time studying since exams are coming up. And yes, as expected, everything seems normal. Nanay and Kute dropped the topic about Simon ever since that night. I came in school an hour early since I have some work left that I forgot to bring at home. I was the only one inside the faculty during that time since most of the professors are in class.

A few minutes after, I saw Sir Ryan walked in without saying any word. He simply walked to his cubicle and sat on his chair like he was so tired. That’s when I knew that something was up with him.

“Sir Ryan, ayos lang po kayo?” I asked. Sir Ryan took a glanced at me and sighed. He gave me a nod then after a few seconds, he brought himself near my table by sliding on his office chair.

“Actually, I’m not.” He said. “Me and my wife, Raffi, we .. we had an argument. Our son, Inigo, is turning seven soon. Ngayon, napagtalunan namin kung saan kami mag se-celebrate. She wants to spend it at home pero ako, gusto kong magpa-party na lang sa Jollibee or McDo, since it both save us time and hindi pa kami mapapagod sa paghahanda.” He explained. “It’s going to be this weekend and we still haven’t planned anything.”

I smiled at the troubled Sir Ryan. Love really does turn everything around. “Ganito kasi ‘yan Sir Ryan. Sa tingin ko, ang gusto lang naman ni Ma’am Raffi, ma-experience full hand ‘yung celebration ni Inigo. Naiiintindihan ko naman ‘yung reason mo in choosing the party sa Jollibee. Yes, convenient pero, hindi kasi personalized eh.” I tried to explain. “You can always hire people naman kung sa inyo kayo magse-celebrate. Saka mas madami kasing advantage kung sa inyo na lang Sir Ryan. Una, mas maraming tao. Pangalwa, hindi limitado ‘yung oras niyo. May after party pa kayong matatanda.” I said with a smile.

I sly smile flew in Sir Ryan’s lips. “I guess you are right, Maya.” He said. “I guess I wasn’t really open to Raffi’s suggestion kaya hindi ko rin maconsider ‘yung idea nya.”

“Nako Sir Ryan, aminin mo, dun kita sa idea ng after party nakumbinsi.” I teased.

“Well ..” He said and shrugged his shoulders in a very comical manner. Boys will be boys. “And you’re invited ha. I’ll probably give the invitation on Wednesday.” He said and I know that I couldn’t say no to his offer. “I’m impressed ha. Magaling ka mangumbinsi. Nabago mo agad ‘yung perspective ko.”

“Ganon naman talaga kapag lovelife Sir Ryan. Parang universal language na ‘yan ng tao. Saka ‘wag kang magsawang mag-compromise. Minsan kasi, ‘yun na ‘yung best decision.” I proudly said.

“Ang swerte siguro sa’yo ng boyfriend mo, ano? Hindi siguro siya nahihirapan kasi ang galling mong umintindi.” Sir Ryan said.

I bit my lower lip. Does he really need to bring that up? But then again, he doesn’t actually know what happened. “Ay, ano Sir, ex. Ex-boyfiend na.” I said, putting emphasis on that magic word.

“HA?” Sir Ryan exclaimed. “Kailan pa? I mean, what happened? Sinong nakipag-break? May aabangan na ba kami mamaya? Do we need to plan for a revenge?” He said.

I chuckled. “Alam niyo Sir? Mas tsismosa pa kayo sa mga babaeng kilala ko.” I said. “Hay nako Sir. Nung Saturday lang. Pero wala namang gulo. We just decided na we’re being unfair to each other. And that we couldn’t work it out.” I explained.

“Do you want ice cream? We can go out after class.” Sir Ryan offered.

“Nako Sir ‘wag na. Okay na naman ako. Wala naman kaming hard feelings. Saka kung gustuhin ko man, hindi po ako pwede mamaya eh. May class pa po ako under ni Sir Dean ‘di ba po?” I said.

“That reminds me. Kamusta kayo ni Lim?” He enthusiastically asked. Before I could even answer, someone came in. It was Sir Dean. “Well, speaking of the devil.” Sir Ryan muttered. I bit my lower lip to stop myself from laughing and I just hit Sir Ryan’s arm instead.

“Good morning po Sir Dean.” I greeted.

“Good morning.” He greeted back. “Ay Maya, I forgot something.” He said and he opened his bag to reach for something. Then he placed pack of Otap and Rosquillos on my table. “From Dad. Pinabibigay pala niya. I forgot to give it to you last Saturday.”

“Ha? Pero hindi naman ako obligadong bigyan nito ni Tito Roberto eh. But please do tell him na salamat.” I replied.

“Magkasama kayo last Saturday?” Sir Ryan asked with a big smile on his face. “Teka, Lim. Nasaan ang pasalubong ko from Tito? Galing siyang Cebu last Friday ‘di ba?”

“Wag ka na raw sabi ni Dad. Kaya mo naman daw lumipad pa-Cebu anytime.” Sir Dean said.

“Si Tito talaga. Nung nagkaasawa na ko, hindi na niya ako pinapadalhan ng pasalubong.” Sir Ryan said. “So, Maya, you’ve already met Tito Roberto?”

I nodded. “Grabe Sir Ryan. Nastarstruck ako. Hindi ko ineexpect na Chancellor pala ‘yung dad ni Ricky.” I said. Sir Ryan’s jaw suddenly dropped but he looks so amused. What now?

“Lim! She called you by your nickname!” Sir Ryan exclaimed and then he laughed so hard. I didn’t even noticed that I called Sir Dean, Ricky. I must’ve slipped. “Maya, alam mo bang isang linggo akong hindi pinansin ni Lim nung itinawag ko sa kanya ‘yan?” He said.

“You were mocking me Molina.” Sir Dean said. “I have to be in my office. I’ll see you later.” He said. He actually looks gloomy today. I don’t know if he’s sick or something. There’s just something off with him.

“Lim! Do you want to eat?” Sir Ryan quickly asked, making Sir Dean to look back at us. “Single order ng burger? Single cheese? Or maybe single order ng spaghetti? Anything! Just give me your single order.” He said. I was embarrassed on how he put so much stress in the word single. He even said it slower than the other words.

Ricky just narrowed his eyes at Sir Ryan. He doesn’t seem to get whatever Sir Ryan is saying. “I’ll be in my office.” He said and closed the door to his room.

“Ay nako naman Richard, ang slow mo!” Sir Ryan exclaimed as he buried his face in his hands. “Please excuse me, Maya. Puntahan ko lang si Lim ha?” He said with a smile and before I could even nod, he stood up and entered his office without knocking.

I just shook my head with a smile. Those two really are fun to watch. I reached for the pasalubong that Tito Roberto gave and placed them in my drawer. I gathered my things and stood up to go to my class.

“Ms. Dela Rosa!” A voice called me. It was Ms. Belmonte. “Buti nahabol kita. Could I please ask for a favor?” She asked.

“Oo naman po, Ma’am, basta po makakaya.” I replied. Ms. Belmonte is a fellow professor. She was also one of my friends while I was studying my bachelor’s degree here in PUS.

“My daughter was admitted today because dengue. Pinaplano ko sana na mag-leave bukas. Okay na ‘yung schedule nung iba kong class kaso meron lang isa na from 4-5:30PM. Nakita ko kasi ‘yung schedule mo na hanggang 4PM lang and you’ll still be in school for Sir Santelices’ class ‘di ba?” She said and I nodded. “I was wondering kung pwede ka sanang maging substitute for that class. Puro kasi hindi na available ‘yung ibang faculty members eh.”

“Sige lang po Ma’am, wala naman po akong schedule ng ganong oras.” I replied.

“My God, Maya. You’re my savior!” She exclaimed. “Anyway, I’ll leave the flash drive on your table before I leave today. Nandoon na ‘yung ppt presentation para if you ever need to recap, you can do so.” She explained.

“Ma’am, kahit ‘yung nasa akin na lang po ‘yung gamitin. Parehas lang naman po ata ng laman. Ano na po bang topic niyo sa Intro to Biology?” I asked.

“Ay Maya, that’s the thing. Hindi kasi intro ‘yung class tomorrow.” She said. “Genetics sya. Introduction siya for central dogma pero kung matapos ng maaga, you could discuss replication.” She explained. My knees started to tremble. I will be teaching Genetics. My most hated subject. I. Maya Dela Rosa who got a failing mark will teach genetics. “Ay Maya, I have to go. May huli pa kong class. Thanks again! You truly are a blessing!” She quickly said before she left.

I started massaging my temple. I am so doomed. I am not really a master of central dogma. It’s where those four letters appear and then it would be translated and all of that stuff. I took a deep breath to calm myself down. I still have a long day ahead of me. I should worry about it later.

The day dragged on and my last class was finished. I slowly made my way back to our faculty as I tried to contemplate. Tomorrow will be the end of my career. I will finally teach something I do not know, and probably, there are students who will know the topic better than I do. I really am doomed.

“Maya.” A voice brought me back from my thoughts. “Zenaida left this before she left.” Ma’am Ched said as she placed a flash drive on my table. “Substitute ka raw nya bukas.” She added and I just nodded my head. Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t be optimistic about this.

I spent my whole afternoon break scanning the power point presentation that Ms. Belmonte prepared. It was detailed but whenever I start reading it, I would drown in the different terms that she uses. Even I need to attend a genetics class to understand everything.

“I wonder why you suddenly have a liking for genetics.” A voice said making me jolt from my seat. It was Sir Dean. And he’s leaning down beside me, with his hand on the back of my chair and his other on my table, as he leaned down to read what is on the laptop. “Nag-aadvance reading ka ba for my lecture? But I would be discussing it tomorrow, not today.”

“Ricky!” I muttered and he gave me shocked face. “Ay sorry. Sir Dean! Si Ms. Belmonte kasi, nakisuyo na magsubstitute ako bukas.” I explained.

“You accepted it even though genetics ‘yung subject?” He asked.

“Yun nga ‘yung mali ko eh. Hindi ko agad natanong. Kaya ayon, napa-oo agad ako kahit hindi ko pa alam kung anong subject.” I said and Sir Dean just laughed at me. “Sige pa, Sir Dean, tawanan niyo na lang ako.” I said as I buried my head on my face due to embarrassment.

“Sino ba kasing nagsabi sa’yo na tumanggap ka agad ng trabaho nang hindi mo alam kung anong ituturo mo.” He said and it just made me feel worse. “Central dogma ‘yan ‘di ba?” He asked and I just nodded. “Hindi mo pa rin alam ‘yan?”

“Alam ko Sir Dean pero basic lang. Alam ko ‘yung three steps pero kung .. kung ikukumpara natin ‘yung knowledge mo dun sa knowledge ko pagdating sa mga procedure, mga enzymes, lamang na lamang na ‘yung iyo.” I said. Then an idea popped up. “Pwede bang ikaw na lang ‘yung mag-sub Sir Dean?” I asked as I looked at him dearly.

“Maya, even though you are charming, I can’t. I’ll blow my cover. And I have class tomorrow. Malalaman ko pa bukas kung makakapagturo ako or Ma’am Ched will also be substituting.” He explained.

I looked back at the screen of the laptop and scanned through the pages again. Maybe I can learn this whole thing tonight. I could pull up another all nighter to study. But then I remembered, I also have a long test on Sir Dean’s class.

“Hey, Maya.” Sir Dean called. He must’ve noticed that I have no idea what to do. “If you want, I could teach you.” He offered. “After my class.” He said.

A smile already formed on my lips but then I remembered something, “Sir Dean, late na by that time eh. Kaialngan ko nang umuwi non.” I sadly said.

“Then I’ll dismiss you guys earlier. Kahit 7:30. I’ll give an assignment na lang.” He said with a smile. “No buts. I’m the Dean. I can do what I want. Deal?”

And that was enough to brighten up my gloomy day. “Deal Sir Dean!” I happily replied. “Kaso Sir Dean, sinasara na ata ‘tong faculty around –“

“Don’t worry. Dun tayo sa bahay.” He said and my heart started beating fast. “O, it’s almost six in the evening. Hindi ka pa ba pupunta sa classroom? I’ll mark you tardy kapag nauna pa ako.” He said with a smile.

I quickly stood up from my chair and left the room. I entered our classroom and sat on the same chair where I’ve always seated. A few seconds later, Sir Dean entered the room with a sly smile on his face.

“Good evening class. Let’s start our lesson.” He said and his eyes found mine.

And yes.

I am looking forward to the tutorial later.

Wherever You Will Go 23

Chapter 23

Ricky and I were seated opposite each other on the table in his library. I’ve been staring at the first problem on the paper for about half an hour now and I couldn’t understand what I should do. It’s a problem about modifier genes where I have to figure out the probability of the different types of offspring based on the parents’ genes. The type of offspring is even dependent whether the parents are carrying a dominant or recessive gene. And because this is all about modifier genes, the simple presence of one gene, either dominant or recessive, could give a whole new expression on the offspring.

Even talking about it makes it complicated.

No wonder I got a failing mark at this subject.

I am so doomed.

“You’ve been staring at that paper for about forty minutes.” Ricky said as he looked from his watch. While I am mourning over this paper, he’s been studying, too with his medical school stuff. “Still no answer?”

“Ricky, gustong-gusto kong magsulat. Hindi ko lang alam kung anong isusulat ko. Saka kung saan ako magsisimula.” I truthfully said. I dropped my head on the table and I started shaking my head. “Babagsak na naman ata ako eh.”

“Hey.” He said and I felt a hand on my head, moving it until it’s turned sideways. “Hindi ka babagsak, okay? Do you know the difference between the genetics subject you took then and now?” He asked. I just shrugged my shoulders. I don’t think there’s a difference. I’m still failing. “Well, you have me this time.” He said and a smile crept on my face.

I sat up properly and took a deep breath. “Okay Ricky. Pwede bang paturo?” I asked.

“Ayaw mo ng sagot?” He teased.

“Anong gagawin ko sa sagot kung hindi ko naman maiintindihan?” I replied. “Saka lagot ako pag exams. Wala rin akong isasagot.”

He gave his lopsided smile and transferred to the chair beside me. He grabbed one scratch paper and a pen. “Modifier gene is the reason why some appearances of offsprings are altered even though there is primary expression of genes.” He started. “For example, there are cases that when a gene is homozygous recessive, they can have dominance over the dominant trait.” Then he started writing on the paper. “Take a mouse coat color for example. One parent with a black coat and one parent with an albino coat were mated. But both is carrying the recessive genes for the other.” He said as he continued to write on the paper. “So CCaa for the black coat and ccAA for the albino. Capitalized for dominance ‘di ba? And double capital for indication of being homozygous dominant or recessive.”

I nodded. I know this part. I understand most of the lectures in genetics. It’s just that I don’t even know how to start when it’s already about the problem cases. “So when you cross them, your filial 1 hybrid or offspring will be two CcAa which are both agouti or ‘yung brown colored. Then you’re going to cross them again. And here’s the trick. Do not cross them. All you need to do is to remember the pattern 9:3:3:1 for your 2nd filial hybrid. What’s the pattern again?”

“Uh, 9:3:3:1.” I repeated.

“That’s your magic number. Remember that. It all goes down to the expression of the gene. So we have 9 C_A_ : 3 C_aa : 3 ccA_ : 1 ccaa.” He said as he wrote it down.

“Bakit blangko ‘yung iba Ricky?” I asked.

“Cause you are just assuming the expression of their genes. Parang hypothetically, ganyan ‘yung kakalabasan nila. Of course, it comes with the magic number. Pero if you want to figure out, if it’s recessive or dominant, you can manually do the solution. Matagal nga lang.” He explained. “Then sabi ko kanina, when there’s a presence of homozygous recessive, that gene will be expressed ‘di ba?” I nodded. “Ayan. Figure out what their colors would be.”

“Okay. There will be 9 agouti because their expression is similar to the first filial hybrid, which are the parents. Tapos ‘yung 3 C_aa, um, albino? Kasi ‘di ba homozygous recessive?” I asked.

“That’s right. Continue.” Sir Dean said.

“Tapos ‘yung 3 ccA_, black, gawa ng homozygous na ‘c’ and there will be 1 more albino.” I said. I looked at Ricky for any signs of mistake but I got a nod instead. “Kaya ang magiging sagot, 9 agouti: 3 black: 4 albino?”

“Ayan. Very good. See? Kaya mo naman eh.” Sir Dean said. “The rest is similar. Kailangan mo lang hanapin kung aling gene ‘yung magiging dominant over the other. And there are patterns naman. You have 9:3:4 for recessive epistasis, then there’s 9:7 sa complementary gene. I’ll write it down so you can understand.” He said. “I actually gave this in class but since hindi ka nakikinig-“

“Nakikinig nga kasi ako!” I protested. I grabbed my notebook and saw that I already wrote down what Ricky is writing on the paper. “May notes kaya ako.”

“May notes, hindi naman maintindihan.” He said. “Ah! Stop stop!” He quickly said when I pinched his cheek. “Nagmamagandang loob na nga akong magturo eh.”

“Sabi ko nga.” I said and we both laughed. “Hindi ko maintindihan kung anong mali sa’kin. Naiintindihan ko naman ‘yung turo mo pero nahihirapan lang talaga akong mag-solve.” I said.

“It takes practice. Magsolve ka pa. Start with number one.” He said. I analyzed the whole problem with him asking questions that guides me as I wrote the solution. I got used to those type of problems then I encountered one with a different type of problem.

“You need to get used to it, Maya. Hindi lahat ng itatanong ko, pare-pareho ng pattern. Basta you need to analyze first.” He said.

“Nalilito ako kung aling letter ‘yung dapat i-capitalize, kung alin ‘yung dominant.” I said.

“It’s indicated in the problem lagi. But not straightforward.” He replied. “For example, a married couple has the genes for  .. Chinito eyes and Doe eyes.” He said and I couldn’t help but chuckle. “Mamaya ka na tumawa. Isulat mo na.” He said and I just burst out laughing. Sir Dean continued the problem and to my surprise, I answered it correctly. After that, I continued answering the problem set. Though he doesn’t say if my answer is correct or not and I think it’s because it will be unfair for the other students. Nevertheless, my answers feels right more or so.

“Ricardo, mag-merienda muna kayo.” Manang Fe said as she entered the room. She was carrying a tray with a pitcher of juice and three sandwiches. “Tulog na tulog sa sofa si Niccolo. Kukuhanan ko na ba ng kumot ‘yung batang iyon?” She asked.

Sir Dean stood up to get the tray from Manang. “Wag na ho. Mainit naman Manang. Saka baka ho magising na ‘yon mamaya. Makakaamoy ng pagkain ‘yon eh.” He said.

“Kumain na po kayo Manang Fe?” I asked with a smile.

She looked at me for awhile before she spoke, “Nakakain na ako sa baba. Pag may kailangan kayo, nasa baba lang ako ha?”

“Sige po. Thank you po.” I replied. Manang Fe came forward and whispered something to Sir Dean. Then she smiled at me then left. I looked at Sir Dean and he’s wearing a huge smile on his face. “Oy Ricky. Anong sinabi ni Manang Fe?”

“Do you really want to know?” He asked.

“Oo naman. May kinalaman ba sa’kin?” I asked as I placed a sandwich on his plate.

“Sabi ni Manang, bagay daw tayo.” Ricky said and he quickly took a bit on his sandwich. He took a glance at me from the corner of his eyes but still kept mum. “Mukhang wala kang reaksyon ah.”

“Eh wala naman akong dapat ireact eh.” I just said with a smile. “Ang sabihin mo, kinilig ka sa sinabi ni Manang.” I teased.

His mouth gaped. “Do you really have to pin everything back to me?” He said and I laughed. I never thought there’s a side of Sir Dean like this. He is really different when he’s not in school. He’s looser, and he rides with banters like this.

I was surprised to see that it’s already dusk outside. I was so hooked in doing this homework that I lost track of time. I noticed that Sir Dean fell asleep on the couch. He transferred there earlier after setting up the stereo to play music. He said that the silence is killing him.

“Nag-sountrip nga, nakatulog naman.” I muttered as I approached him. I couldn’t really blame him, considering the amount of work he’s been doing, not just as a Dean but also as a student. I lifted my hands to remove his eyeglasses since he fell asleep while still wearing it, then I placed it on the table. I was about to stand up but I stayed for a bit longer, just watching him sleep. I couldn’t help but smile. I am really glad that he agreed to my idea of coexistence.

I went down after to see Manang Fe chopping some vegetables. She saw me right away and gave me a smile. “O, nasaan sila?” She asked.

“Manang, nakatulog po si Ricky eh. Hindi ko po namalayan. Si Niccolo, nagising naman po nung ginising ko kaso natulog po ulit.” I replied.

“Mga bata talaga na ‘yan.” She said. “Umupo ka na muna dyan Maya. Nagluluto lang ako ng pang-hapunan nyo. Pagpasensyahan mo na ‘yang si Ricardo. Ang aga nagising kanina. Excited ata.” She said with a teasing smile.

I just smiled back. I don’t want to jump into any conclusions just yet. “Tulungan ko na po kayo Manang.” I said. She protested at first but I convinced her that I want to help since I have nothing else to do, and that I am used to cooking because of our karinderya. Manang even discovered some tricks in cooking that Kute taught me.

“Ricardo, buti gising ka na.” Manang Fe said. I turned around and saw that Sir Dean is leaning on the wall near the cupboard.

“Okay ka lang Ricky?” I asked as I stirred the pan.

“I’m okay. Sumakit lang ‘yung ulo ko.” He replied. “Niccolo’s awake as well. Nag-cr lang.” He said. He then took a seat at the high chairs around the island table. “Manang, keep an eye on her. Baka nilagyan na nya ng gayuma ‘yung ulam natin.”

“Nako Ricardo, baka magayuma ka kahit walang nilalagay si Maya. Masarap pala magluto ‘tong batang ito.” Manang Fe exclaimed.

“Wag ka Ricky. Si Manang Fe na nagsabi nyan ha.” I quickly said.

“Manang! Nagayuma ka na agad nyan o. You didn’t even notice!” Sir Dean continued and we all laughed.

“Ito talagang batang ‘to oh.” Manang Fe said. “Ipagtitimpla na muna kita nang kape nang mahulasan ka muna.” The elder said.

“Ay Manang, ako na po, nang mapatunayan kong hindi ako nanggagayuma.” I said and she just laughed at me. Manang took over the cooking and after making Sir Dean’s coffee, I slid the cup in front of him. “Walang gayuma.” I said proudly.

Sir Dean took the cup of coffee but before he drink it, he looked at me and said, “Kahit naman walang gayuma eh.” He muttered then took a sip. My heart fluttered. I thought we have coexistence? But with every day that pass, why do I find myself being like this to Sir Dean?

“Kuya Richaaaard. May pagkain ba?” Niccolo asked as he entered the dining area as he stretched his arms. I went back beside Manang Fe to help her. “Ang bango kasi eh.”

“Maya’s cooking.” I heard Sir Dean say. “But hold on. Niccolo, I had high expectation sa’yo sa pagpunta mo sa bahay. Kain tulog ka lang pala eh.” He continued.

“Kaya nga Kuya eh. Masyado kasi akong excited kagabi. Hindi ako nakatulog.” Niccolo explained. “Babawi na lang ako sa susunod.”

“At may plano ka na agad bumalik ha.” His Kuya replied.

“Oo naman Kuya Richard. Tanggap naman ako ni Tito Roberto eh. Saka ni Manang Fe! Lalong lalo na si Ma’am Maya.” He said.

“Alam mo Niccolo, feeling ko gutom ka na talaga eh.” I said as I turned the stove off. “Tulungan mo naman kami ni Manang sa paghahain. Luto na ‘yung ulam.” I continued and his eyes just glowed.

We had dinner afterwards with Manang Fe joining us. The table was filled with laughter as Sir Dean and Niccolo continue their banter about the latter spending most of his time in the house sleeping. After that, we helped Manang wash the dishes and tidy up things.

“Ate Maya.” Niccolo called. We finally settled earlier that he needs to call me like that if we’re the only ones around. “I’m having a sleepover. Payag si Kuya Richard. Pwedeng ikaw din? Alam ko namang papayag si Kuya. Lalo na si Tito.” He said.

I was on the verge of saying yes when my phone beeped. It was a text from Simon.

Maya, nasa bahay niyo ako. Can we talk?

My heart hammered so loud. What does he want to talk about?

“Maya, are you also spending the night here?” Sir Dean asked. I could see the hope in his eyes but I just can’t this time.

“I-I need to go Sir Dean.” I replied. “Si Simon kasi, nasa bahay.” I could see the hurt in Sir Dean’s eyes, yet he nodded and offered me a ride home.

Sir Dean stopped a few blocks away from our house. He said that I should get down from there so that Simon wouldn’t get suspicious of who I was with. I bid farewell and told Niccolo that I would make it up to them. After they left, I walked to our house and saw Simon outside.

Thing is, I know something is wrong.

“Maya.” He said when he saw me. “Can we talk?”

Wherever You Will Go 22

Chapter 22

My alarm in my phone started ringing and I hit snooze right away. I’ve set up four alarms because I know I wouldn’t wake up that easily. It started ringing again and once again I hit snooze. I slept late last night. It was because of Kute. When I got home last night, she was waiting for me to tell my story. And there was something that she told me that didn’t put me to sleep.

“Siguro bunso, panahon na para makipagbreak ka kay Simon.” Those words kept on ringing on my ear like I’ve recorded it or something. It is bothering me. I kept on defending myself that it is wrong, that I should still keep my relationship with him since I am not doing anything wrong. Yet Kute managed to stir up everything inside of me again.

“Bunso, may gusto ka ba kay Sir Dean mo?” She asked and I was mum. “Kasi sa nakikita ko, hindi ka maghahangad ng ganyan kung wala kang nararamdaman.”

“Kute, hindi ba sinabi ko na sa’yo na wala? Saka hindi ba sabi mo rin na baka malungkot lang kaming dalawa kasi ako, walang time si Simon sakin, tapos si Sir Dean .. ano, maraming inaasikaso.” I argued.

“Alam ko naman ‘yung sinabi ko bunso, pero malay mo, mali ako. Ikaw lang talaga ‘yung makakasagot sa mga tanong mo eh. And maybe its time to call it quits kay Simon. Wala na siyang time sa’yo. Hindi ba unfair ‘yon para sa’yo? Alam kong naiintindihan mo na inuuna nya ‘yung career nya. Eh paano ka naman?” She explained. “Alam ko kung gaano kaswerte si Simon sa’yo. Pero Maya, kung nahihirapan ka, don’t you think it’s time for you to realize that you deserve someone better?”

I texted Simon last night. I just said that I miss him and how’s he doing in meds chool. But as expected, I got no reply, no calls even. Honestly, it has been like this ever since I got back from Baguio. I don’t know if he is busy or he just forgets that he needs to call me or even text me. I don’t even know if he is still considers this relationship.

I just stared at the ceiling after I woke up. What is going on with me? I thought I had everything in control yet in a snap like this, I’m completely crumbling down. I have people who I can trust but it feels like I’m being a complete burden to them.

A notification from my phone brought be back from my thoughts. I reached for it and saw a text from Sir Dean. What threw my off guard was the time. It’s already 10AM. I quickly got up from my bed and opened Sir Dean’s message. There are three.

Goodmorning.

Are you still asleep?

Hey. Are you coming? Niccolo and I are waiting.

My phone started ringing and I almost dropped it. I hit the answer button without looking who was calling. “H-Hello.”

“Maya, where are you? Nasa canteen kami ni Niccolo.” It was Sir Dean. I slapped my head and closed my eyes. I totally forgot that we are going to meet today.

“Ah, S-Sir Dean, kasi, ano, kakagising ko lang? Pwede bang pass muna ako? Kayo na lang muna ni Niccolo? Babawi na lang ako.” I said then bit my lower lip. I think this will be added to the list of my embarrassing moments.

“Kakagising mo lang? It’s already 10 Maya.” He said on the other line.

“Kaya nga Sir Dean eh. Kasi kagabi, inumaga na kami ni Kute sa pag-uusap. Naku, sorry talaga. Babawi talaga ako.” I said.

“Ayos lang naman sa’ming dalwa ni Niccolo.” He said, to my surprise. “But your problem set might not be okay with it. It’s a two paged one. I don’t think you’ll be able to answer and pass it on Monday alone.” He said.

Oh sht. I totally forgot about that. “S-Sige Sir Dean. Ano, uhm, maliligo na ko. Bibilisan ko –“ I stopped when something hit me. “Wait. Why do I have a feeling that you’ve planned this all along?” I asked.

I heard a chuckle on the other line. “Ang alin? Purposely not giving you the problem set last night so that I have a guarantee that you’ll be coming today? Of course not!” He said and then I heard someone laugh. I bet it is Niccolo. “Sige na Maya. Dalian mo na. Sa bahay ka na kumain. I told Manang we’ll be eating.” He said.

“Kung hindi lang talaga dahil sa problem set na ‘yan Sir Dean, hindi talaga ako pupunta.” I mocked.

“Kaya nga pumunta ka na eh. Ayaw pa nito. Free tutorial na nga.” He said and I could hear him smiling on the other line.

“Sige na po Sir Dean, ibababa ko na ‘to para makaligo na ko.” I said putting stress on the word ‘po’. He just chuckled on the other line.

“I’ll see you later. Ingat.” He said and ended the call. I quickly took a bath and dressed up with some random blouse and denim pants. I wore sneakers this time since I’m already late. I quickly grabbed my bag and when I left my room, Kute was sitting again on the couch in the living room.

“Mukhang may lakad tayo ah.” She said. “Gigisingin na sana kita eh. Hinahanap ka na ni Nanay sa’kin.” She continued.

“Tinanghali na ko ng gising Kute eh. Saka ‘di ba, may lakad ako sa school? Nasabi ko na kagabi ah.” I replied.

“Kaya nga. Naipaalam na kita kay Nanay pero magsabi ka pa rin pagbaba mo. Medyo marami lang tao sa baba.” She replied. I just nodded and said goodbye, then she spoke again. “Ano lang bunso, wag kang masyadong mag-isip ha? Go with the flow ka lang. Saka syempre, priorities muna ha?”

I nodded again and said, “Oo naman Kute. Kaya ko ‘to.” I said and left. After saying goodbye to Nanay, I quickly hailed a cab. I bet that those two are still waiting for me. When I arrived at the campus, I sent a text to Sir Dean.

Sir Dean, nasa campus na ako. Nasaan kayo?

My phone rang immediately. Sa canteen pa rin. Look for my car. Dun na kami ni Niccolo.

I reached the canteen and saw the black bmw of Sir Dean. I knocked on the backseat and the window rolled down. Niccolo instructed me to sit at the passenger seat.

“Good morning Sir Dean. Sorry late ako.” I said as I sat down. Sir Dean just chuckled and started driving toward their house.

“One hour late. Bagong record ‘yan ah.” He said as he went pass the dormitory.

“Sorry na nga eh.” I replied.

“Kuya Richard! Mamaya na kayo mag-away. Bilisan mo na ‘yung pagda-drive please. Gusto ko na talagang makapasok sa loob.” Niccolo interrupted.

We arrived shortly at Sir Dean’s house. The gates automatically opened. It was the same mansion that I saw. There are two cars that are parked. One Mercedes Benz and the one that I rode on the last time I was here. Sir Dean parked his beside the Benz and got out to open my door. An old lady opened the door before we could even get inside.

“Ricardo, buti dumating ka na. Hinahanap ka ng Daddy mo.” She said. Sir Dean went still for second, then the old lady noticed me and Niccolo. “Ah, bisita mo?”

“Opo Manang. Si Niccolo po. ‘Yung bata po dun sa kinainan natin dati na sizzling? Saka si Maya po. Ah, kaibigan ko po.” He said. “Ah guys, si Manang Fe. She’s the caretaker of the house.”

“Saka taga-alaga na rin kay Ricardo.” She said. Niccolo and I said our hellos and she greeted us with a smile. She’s a really charming lady. “Sige na pumasok na kayo. Naihanda ko na rin ang pagkain. Nasa veranda ang daddy mo.” She said and then she went inside.

Sir Dean nodded and turned around to face us then he scratched the back of his head. “I didn’t actually plan this.” Then he sighed. “Let’s go inside.” He said. We all walked into the familiar hallway of his house. Niccolo kept on saying how big Sir Dean’s house is. Sir Dean on the other hand is awfully quiet. He led us to the kitchen where lunch is served. Then he told us to wait for a bit and walked to the veranda that was just beside the dining area. He was talking to a man that was blocked from my view.

“Tito kain po!” Niccolo said as he placed some rice on his plate after saying grace. Sir Dean looked at us then back at his dad. Then he started walking back to the dining area. A man followed him but the brightness of the sun caused him to be a silhouette for a second, then his figure came into view.

It was Sir Chancy.

“Ah, Maya, meet my Dad. Si –“

“S-Sir Chancy?” I interrupted. A huge smile formed in the lips of the old man.

“Well, if it isn’t Ms. Dela Rosa.” He said and came near me to shake my hand.

“You two know each other?” Sir Dean asked.

“As a matter of fact, yes.” His father answered. “We met when your college had a meeting for the field trip and I had to become your proxy. Nung pinapunta kita ng Japan?”

Sir Dean paused for a bit before he nodded. “Got it.” He said and sat down on the chair beside me. “Why don’t you join us for lunch Dad? Mamaya pa naman ata ang meeting niyo.”

“Hm. Why not?” The older Lim said and sat on the chair beside Niccolo. “O, kumain ka lang Ms. Dela Rosa. Wag kang mahihiya. Gumaya ka rito sa batang katabi ko. At home na at home.”

Niccolo suddenly stopped eating and looked at Sir Chancy. “Tito naman, walang ganyanan. Masarap lang po talaga ‘yung luto ni Manang Fe.” He said and continued to eat.

I was too stunned to talk. No wonder Sir Ryan told me before that all the clues are out and I just have to connect it. But I wasn’t really expecting Sir Chancy to be Sir Dean’s father. I’ve seen it coming that his father would be a big name but I wasn’t really expecting it to be him.

“Maya .. Maya.” Sir Dean called. “Kumain ka na.” He said and he started putting rice on my plate. Then he passed the bowl of rice to his father. “Anong gusto mong ulam?” He asked.

“Ay Sir Dean ako na.” I said and I reached for the plate of fried chicken. “Sige na, kumain ka na rin.” I said.

“Now you know who my father is. I guess you can understand why I’m keeping my surname a secret.” Sir Dean said.

“Hindi pa ba niya alam, Ricky?” Sir Chancy asked. But what caught my attention is the name. Ricky. “Actually Ms. Dela Rosa, maarte lang talaga ‘yang anak ko. Pwede naman niyang gamitin tapos sabihin na lang niya na malayo akong kamag-anak.”

“Dad, it’s different still.” Sir Dean replied then he turned back to me. “You’re awfully quiet Maya.” He said.

“Ah, ako? Hindi. Ano lang, nagulat lang ako na si Sir Chancy pala ‘yung dad mo, Ricky.” I said and a huge smile just crept on my face when I said his nickname. He looked at me with the same amusement in his eyes.

“Don’t you dare use that nickname, Maya. I’m serious. Lalo na kapag nasa labas tayo.” He dared.

“Bakit? Ang cute kaya ng Ricky!” I replied. “Sir Chancy, okay lang po ba na tawagin ko si Sir Dean na Ricky?” I asked his father and he quickly gave me his permission. “O ‘di ba? I have permission.”

“Dad! Do you really have to?” Sir Dean exclaimed to his father but I can clearly see that he is on the verge of laughing.

“Oo naman! Ricky, it’s one of the consequences of not using my surname when you’re in campus.” Sir Chancy played along. “And please, do call me Tito na lang, Ms. Dela Rosa. And can I call you Maya?”

“Oo naman po Tito!” I replied with a smile on my face. “Pero ang cute talaga ng Ricky eh.”

“This is all your fault Dad. Now she can make fun of me.” Sir Dean said making his dad laugh.

“Dapat pala matagal mo nang dinala rito si Maya eh!” Sir Chancy said.

“Ay tito, nauna pa po si Ma’am Maya na makapunta rito sa bahay niyo eh.” Niccolo butted in as he continued to munch on his food.

“Ha? Kailan?” He asked.

“She was the one who took care of me when I was sick.” Sir Dean, Ricky rather said. “That was when you had a business trip in Singapore and Manang went home to take care of her daughter.”

“Oh, I see.” Tito Roberto said. “Naikwento nga ni Fe na nagkasakit ka raw at wala siya para alagaan ka. Well, I do hope that he is not that much of a burden, Maya.”

“Tito, ako pa nga po ata ‘yung burden nung gabing ‘yon eh. I fell asleep po sa library. Umaga na po ako nagising.” I answered and I bit my lip. I think it was too soon for me to tell that story. Tito Roberto and Niccolo looked at each other, then smiled.

“Mabilis pala ‘tong anak ko.” Tito Roberto remarked.

“Dad, stop. Please. Can we just eat?” Sir Dean shyly asked.

“Magkwentuhan na lang kayo Kuya Richard, para nasosolo ko ‘yung pagkain.” Niccolo said as he forked another piece of chicken. The two Lim just laughed at him. The rest of lunch was just filled with banters, mostly because I’m mocking Sir Dean of his nickname. After eating, Tito Roberto said his goodbye. We are all in the living room to watch a movie since Niccolo asked for it but he fell asleep before the movie could even reach the middle.

“Tignan mo ‘tong bata na ‘to. Magyayaya manood ng movie, tutulugan naman pala.” Sir Dean said as he turned the television off.

“Hayaan mo na Ricky, puyat ata eh.” I said.

Sir Dean narrowed his eyes at me. “You’re still using ‘Ricky’ even if my Dad already left?” He asked.

“Oo naman! Bagay kaya sa’yo.” I mocked.

“Ah ganon. Bahala ka sa problem set mo.” He said and started walking away.

“Sir Dean!” I called but he kept on walking away. “Sir Dean naman eh!” I started running until I grabbed his arm. “Masyado ka namang pikon.” He kept his mouth shut and his eyes doesn’t meet mine. “Okay fine, tama na ‘yung Ricky. Back to Sir Dean na ulit.”

Sir Dean looked at me and winked his eye. “I was just playing. Pwede na siguro akong artista.” He said and I laughed so hard.

“Ewan ko sa’yo Ricky.” I said and he just sighed.

“Sige na. You win. You can call me Ricky but please, sana kapag tayo lang dalwa okay?” He asked and I nodded. “Let’s go to the library nang maturuan na kita.” He said as he put his arm on my shoulder. My heart fluttered with what he did. But even if it did, there’s a word that popped in my mind. Coexistence.

Wherever You Will Go 21

Chapter 21

The chinito eyes of Sir Dean narrowed after I muttered those words. “Coexistence, Maya?” He repeated, like trying how the word would feel in his tongue.

I nodded my head nervously. “Yes Sir Dean. Coexistence. That whatever is going on between us, we will do everything to coexist, for the sake of saving this friendship.” I quickly said before I could run out of courage.

The man in front of me gave me silence as an answer. His eyes are focused on me and it feels like my body froze in his look. Maybe what I am offering is a bad idea. But I just couldn’t stand being treated as a stranger by someone that I already consider as .. as.. well, a colleague fits, but is the word friend enough?

Ofcourse it is, Maya. Coexistence nga ‘di ba?

“I-It’s just, I .. I find it hard to understand why after that particular happening in Baguio, we suddenly return to being strangers. Don’t you find it absurd Sir –“

“Maya .. “ Sir Dean interrupted. “You do know that it would be hard for me, right?” He said and he shifted in his seat. “Cause clearly, I have feelings for you.” He admitted.

My heart did its thing again. I never thought that he would be this straightforward in his feelings. Yes, I’ve felt it in the way he held my hand and cared for me, but to actually hear it from him? It sent butterflies to my stomach and I could even feel the warmth in my cheeks. I took a deep breath. “Yes, Sir Dean. Alam ko naman po na mahirap not just for you, even for me.” I said. He looked at me again with such hope in his eyes. But I don’t want to lead him on. It’s already bad that I welcomed all of his gestures back in Baguio. “Pero Sir, hindi ba kayo nanghihinayang? Kasi parang ang gulo? I know that what happened in Baguio was .. was out line but for us to be like strangers because of that? I thought we were better than that. And we’re both mature people. I know that I can’t bring back the past but if I could, I would really really –“

“That’s the thing, Maya.” Sir Dean interrupted and my heart just sank. “We can’t bring back the past and pretend there’s nothing wrong with it.” And with that, I know that things are going on a different direction. I started hearing voices inside my head telling me that everything’s will be okay. I bowed my head down so that the tears don’t run down my face. “So I guess we just have to create new memories.”

“P-Po?” I stammered.

Sir Dean shifted in his seat and leaned back on his chair, with a grin on his face. “We’re going to just create new memories. We need to have a clean slate. Coexistence ‘di ba?” I must’ve smiled so wide since I made him chuckle afterwards. “Okay na? Is that what you want to talk about?”

I nodded eagerly. “Okay na po Sir Dean!” I said with a smile.

“Pero bago tayo magsettle dun sa usapan natin. Can I ask for a favor?” He asked.

“Ano po ‘yon Sir Dean?” I replied.

“Can you please drop the ‘po’ and ‘opo’?” He answered. “I know it’s a form of respect since I am your boss and your dean at the same time but I think Sir Dean would be appropriate. Besides, we’re friends, are we not?”

“Okay Sir Dean. And yes, we are friends.” I replied. The food soon arrived and Niccolo sat with us. The food really is good and Niccolo is a really good company. He kept on telling me stories of the young Sir Dean and Sir Ryan.

“Kuya Richard, drinks?” Niccolo offered with a sly smile. “Wag kang mag-alala. Sagot ko na. Ayos lang daw sabi ni Papa.”

“Saka na muna Niccolo. I’ll be driving. Babawi na lang ako sa susunod.” Sir Dean answered. I bet they are talking about beer or something.

“Ha? Magda-drive ka Kuya? Eh sa loob ka lang naman ng campus nakatira.” Niccolo answered. “Ay. Sorry Kuya. Hindi ata alam ni Ma’am Maya.” He quickly said with the sorriest face I’ve seen.

“Ayos lang. She knows.” Sir Dean replied.

“Ofcourse she knows!” Niccolo exclaimed. “Ma’am Maya, wala pa bang pag-asa sa inyo si Kuya Richard? Alam ko po na sobrang masikreto syang tao pero complete package na ‘to!” He continued even though Sir Dean is trying to shush him. “Nakita niyo na po ba ‘yung bahay nila? Ang laki ‘di ba po? Ang damot lang ni Kuya Richard kasi hindi ako pinapasok. Wala raw syang pinapapasok sa loob. Ang arte.”

“Ganon ba?” I replied. “Edi talo pala kita kasi nakapasok na ako sa loob.”

Niccolo’s jaw dropped. “Kuya Richard! Ang unfair mo ha. Sobra. Sobra talaga.”

Sir Dean just laughed. “Maya was there because I thought she was Tita Ched! And I was sick during that time. Wala ako sa wisyo.” He defended.

The boy crossed his arms and nodded to every word that Sir Dean said. “Okay. Sige. I forgive you Kuya. Pero kailangan mong bumawi. Ang dami mo nang utang.”

“Sige. Bukas na bukas. Dun tayo sa bahay.” Sir Dean said. “I don’t know kung anong gagawin mo pero knowing you, alam kong marami kang trip sa buhay eh.”

“Yes!” Niccolo said as he fist pumped. “Sige Kuya. Papasok ako bukas. Magkita na lang tayo sa canteen. Malapit ka naman don ‘di ba?” He asked and Sir Dean just nodded. “Ma’am Maya! Sama ka bukas?”

“Ha? B-Bakit kasama pa ako? Time niyo ‘yang dalawa. Saka may klase kasi ako bukas eh.” I answered. I am certain that I have my master’s class tomorrow.

“Maya, hindi ako magtuturo bukas. I am pretty sure that I’ve announced that in class. I just gave a problem set sa genetics.” Sir Dean answered. “Parang hindi ka nakikinig ah.”

“Nakikinig ako Sir Dean!” I replied immediately. Okay, maybe not. I was so busy thinking what is going to happen in this dinner. I couldn’t even understand the whole topic for today. I don’t even know if I have a copy of that problem set. Knowing that it’s genetics, I already know that I’ll be in trouble.

“Maya, should we go? It’s already nine in the evening.” Sir Dean said, bringing me back from all of my thoughts. “Una na kami, Niccolo. Just text me tomorrow.”

After bidding farewell to Niccolo and his parents, we sat up and left the food joint. I was about to hail a jeepney when Sir Dean stopped me. “It’s late. Ihahatid na kita.” He said.

“Wag na Sir Dean. Inconvenience pa sa inyo. Sa loob na nga kayo nakatira eh.” I replied.

“Maya, you asked for coexistence. I’m giving it to you.” He just said. “Pero seryoso, gabi na. I’ll just get my car. Saglit lang ‘to.” I was about to protest but he still interrupted me. “I have the weekend off remember?”

“Sabi ko nga Sir Dean. O sya tara na. Nang makauwi ka na rin agad.” I said and crossed the street immediately. We arrived shortly back in front of the faculty where his BMW is parked. He opened the passenger’s door for me and I slid in.

“Nakikinig ka ba talaga sa discussion ko kanina? Parang tulala ka lang eh.” Sir Dean asked as he was driving.

“Sir Dean! Nakikining ako. I swear.” I answered. “Ah, kakanan sa susunod na intersection.”

“I already know where you live.” He said. “Okay fine, nakikinig ka. Papasok sa isang tenga, lalabas sa kabila?” He teased.

“Ito talagang si Sir Dean, ang laki ng trust issue.” I said with a laugh. “Nakikinig talaga ako promise.”

“Hm. Nakakuha ka ng copy ng problem set?” He asked. I replied yes right after and he continued, “Nasaan? Patingin nga.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. What is his problem? “Wait ka lang Sir Dean.” I grabbed my binder where I keep all of my papers. There’s no copy of the problem set. I then grabbed my notebook to see if I placed it between the pages, and still, there’s no paper. I don’t even know what I’m looking for. I don’t even know what it looks like.

“Nakikinig pala ha. Maya, I’ve been teaching for years. Alam ko ang itsura ng student ko kapag nakikinig siya o hindi.” He said. I looked at him as words fail to come out of my mouth. “I told you to grab a copy sa table before you leave. I left it on my table before I left since I have to call my Dad. Lumabas ka ata agad eh.”

And I know in my heart that I did just that. “M-May kopya ka pa Sir Dean?” I asked and he just laughed at me. “Oo na! Sige na. Hindi ako masyadong nakikinig. Medyo lutang ako kanina. Mas inaalala ko pa ‘tong dinner na ‘to.” I truthfully said.

Sir Dean stopped laughing and took a glance at me. “Ano namang ikinaalala mo dito?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “Ewan ko. Na baka tanggapin ko na lang ‘yung sitwasyon. Friendship wasted.” I replied.

There was a second of silence before he spoke. “Why do you want to save this friendship?”

It was my turn to be silent. Isn’t that the question of the day? Why? Why Maya? Truth is, I don’t even know why. My instinct just tell me that if I don’t save this friendship, I have something big that I will lose. So I saved it. And I did. At least I hope I really did. “I don’t actually have the answer for your question Sir Dean. Kapag nahanap ko, sasabihin ko agad.” I just said.

“Gusto mo lang i-take advantage ‘yung mga benefits na makukuha mo dahil kaibigan mo ‘yung Dean mo eh.” He said with a smile.

“Malay mo Sir Dean. User pala talaga ako.” I replied. His face became serious all of a sudden then I heard a click in his car. I noticed that it was the lock in the doors.

“Maya, baba.” He said with a smile.

“Alam mo Sir Dean ang corny mo.” I replied and we both laughed.

“Corny daw pero tumawa sya.” He replied while still laughing. “Pero I wanna thank you Maya. Kung hindi mo ako inapproach kanina, maybe I will continue to treat you the same. I guess I am also grateful in what we have.”

“Kasi iba.” I just said and we both enjoyed the silence after that. We arrived shortly at our house. “Sir Dean bago ako bumaba, pahingi muna nung kopya nung problem set.”

Sir Dean just stared at me for a few seconds. It actually made me conscious on what I look like. “Bukas na. Pupunta ka naman sa bahay eh.”

“Sir Dean ngayon na. Para maaral ko na rin.” I argued.

He just shook his head. “It’s genetics, Maya. Alam kong hirap ka. Bukas na para matuturuan kita.”

“Okay Sir Dean.” I just said. “With free tutorial talaga? Hindi ba pwedeng with free answers na?” I teased.

“User. Bumaba ka na nga.” He said, making me laugh. “I had a good time. We should do this coexistence thing more often.” He said.

“Sige lang Sir Dean. Basta ba with free tutorial eh.” I said and opened my door.

“Now I’m really starting to think na user ka talaga.” He said again.

“Ewan ko sa’yo Sir Dean.” I replied. “I also had a good time. Ingat ka pauwi! See you tomorrow!” I said as I stepped out from his car.

“I’ll see you tomorrow. Goodnight.” He said.

“Goodnight din Sir Dean. Bye.” I said and I closed the passenger door. I watched his car fade into view first before I turned around to go inside our house, only to find Kute sitting on the couch with two cups of coffee on the table.

“Mukhang mahaba habang usapan ito bunso.” She said with a smile.
