A/N : Please listen to the music on the side. Danke!
Richard was nervously standing outside the house he just slept in. He knew he shouldn’t get up just yet but he has to. He’s been dying to execute this plan of his. Getting the approval of Maya’s parents gave him extra courage to keep on courting her. And Maya’s actions were telling him that her answer will be soon.
“Richard, saulo mo na ba yung lyrics?” Kute inquired as she stood beside him with a guitar in her arms. Richard just replied with a nod making her laugh. “Wag ka ngang kabahan dyan! Mamaya lalo mo lang malimutan.”
He took a couple of deep breaths and nodded. “You’re right.” He said but he can still his heart thumping loud. The two of them only prepared everything last night, when Maya was out eating dinner. They kept the planning short since they were afraid that Maya would go right back in.
He was really glad when Kute volunteered to help him. He was having trouble thinking of how he can he find the music he needed. It was really a relief. In a short period of time, he managed to get everyone’s approval and trust.
A while ago, Kute asked her mother to check on Maya to see if she’s already awake. And he knew, the curtains in her room would open any moment soon. He was trying to compose his self before it happens. He knew his future depends on this not just because he wants her to be his girlfriend, but he has this feeling that she’s finally the one.
He felt Kute nudge him on his side and when he turned to look at her, she pointed up and saw Maya’s window finally opened. His nervousness seemed to evaporate when he saw the woman he clearly loves. The sound of the guitar filled the air and when he heard his cue, he started to sing.
Richard was smiling the whole time he was singing. There were a few times that he would glance at his palm whenever he forgets the next line he was going to sing. He was putting his heart out that time. He doesn’t care if he’s singing the wrong tune. All he knows is that he needs to sing it for this woman.
Balang araw ay, malalaman mo rin
At kung ako ay nakatawa
Ikaw lamang ang nakikita
Nalilimutan ko ang itsura ko
Kapag kausap na ikaw
Sana naman ako’y pakinggan
At nang ikaw ay malinawan
Dahil nabihag mo ang paningin pati ang damdamin
ng Chinito… Chinito…
Maya was deeply swooning as she listened to Richard’s voice. She knew the song but she never expected him to sing his own version. Never in a million years did she think that Richard would court her like this. She never thought that he would be this bold about his feelings for her. A smile was still plastered on her face as she watched him, but something crossed her mind.
“N-nay. Bawal pa si Richard bumangon ‘di ba?” Maya told her mother who’s standing behind her. “Bakit naman bumangon pa ‘to oh.”
“Nak, pabayaan mo na siya. Gusto niya yan. Nagulat nga din ako sa plano nilang yan nung kinausap ako ni Cristina Rose eh.” Teresita said.
“Kailan po sinabi sa inyo?” Maya inquired as she continued to watch Richard sing outside.
“Kagabi lang. Bago kami matulog.” Her mother said. Maya’s eyes widened with shock. “Kagabi lang po? E di ba dapat nagpapahinga siya nun?” She worriedly said and moved away from the window to go down. “Maya! San ka pupunta?”
“Bababa po. Pupuntahan ko po si Richard. Masama sa kanya ‘to eh.” She said and continued to walk but Teresita stopped her.
“Nak, papatigilin mo si Richard?” Her mother asked.
“Bakit nak? Ayaw mo ba nung ginagawa niya para sa’yo?”
Maya smiled at her mother. “Bet na bet niyo si Richard eh no, Nay?” She teased and held her mother’s hands. “Nay, wala po akong sinabi na ayoko nung ginagawa ni Richard.” Then she pouted. “Kaya lang po, masama pa po para sa kanya ‘tong ginagawa niya, kaya po ako bababa.” She ended. Teresita smiled at her daughter and let her go.
“Nak, alam mo bang hindi ka mag-aalala kay Richard kung hindi mo –“
“Alam ko po, Nay.” Maya replied with a smile. “Sigurado na po ako sa nararamdaman ko ngayon.”
Richard stopped singing when he saw Maya disappear from the window. His nervousness came back again. He was smiling the whole time and in just a second, it disappeared. Various thoughts interrupted his mind. Did she found my voice irritating? Was I annoying?
He turned to Kute on his right. “Tuloy lang Richard!” She said as she did some adlibs on her guitar. But how could he if the one he needs to serenade was not there? A crowd formed around them. Great, I gathered an audience. He was still mum. He doesn’t know what to do. It’s like she dumped him and that kind of rejection is quite painful.
He was about to turn around to go back inside the house when he spotted this familiar lady. He smiled at the sight of her. Kute was also smiling beside him as she continued to strum.
“I thought you shut me off.” He said.
“Hindi no. Pinuntahan kita dito kasi bawal ka pang magtatayo. Kakagaling mo lang sa ospital ah. Masama ‘yan sa’yo.” Maya said as she walked to reach him. “Tara na sa loob.”
“Sorry, but I can’t.” He said with the usual smile on his face. “I’m not leaving until I get an answer, Maya.”
“Answer?” She asked though she has a feeling what he meant. “Richard, pumasok na tayo sa loob, nakakahiya sa mga tao dito.” She continued as she looked at the people around them.
Richard just chuckled and looked at Kute to ask for his cue. Without giving Maya any choice, he stood in front of her and reached for her hands. He started singing as he held her gaze with his.
Richard could see Maya’s amusement to what he’s doing. He also noticed those reddened cheeks of hers. He lifted her hands that he is holding and brought it to his lips for a kiss. And then he settled them on his chest as he continued to sing.
The two of them had these foolish smiles on their faces when the song ended. The whole piece was not just about Richard being a Chinito but it was his confession to her and they both knew it. Richard was still holding her hands and looking straight into her eyes like he’s never going to let go. Maya felt her heart jumped with joy of what just happened. She was sure, so sure, that she definitely feels the same way Richard does.
“Maya, I know this plan was all crazy and sudden but .. but I don’t care. I might’ve sung the tune wrong but I still don’t care. All I care about is you. Ikaw na isang iyakin. But I vow to wipe those tears and I promise that I will do anything not to make you cry –“
“Richard, pumasok na tayo sa loob. Baka atakihin ka na naman niyan.” Maya interrupted as she tried to put on a straight face.
“Lalo akong aatakihin if you don’t hear me out.” He said and lifted his brows as if asking Maya what she would do. She sighed and shrugged in defeat. Richard took a deep breath and started speaking again. “Alam kong hindi pa tayo matagal magkakilala pero it feels like I’ve known you for a thousand years.” He looked straight into Maya’s eyes to say those words he really wants to say. “Maya, I –“
“Nakatulog ka ba ng maayos kagabi? Bakit parang wala kang tulog?Alam mo dapat nagpahinga ka na lang tapos ginawa mo ‘to kapag –“
“maayos ka na.” Maya continued to say and did not let Richard interrupt her. “Kasi hindi lang ikaw ang malalagot niyan. Mahirap kaya yang kondisyon mo tapos –“
“I’m in love with you, Maya.” Richard said, his voice so loud that all the people around them heard every word and left the woman standing in front of him mum. They crowd made an ‘ayieeee’ sound but Richard didn’t mind them. “I know I already fell for you when you didn’t left me that Summit, I fell even more when we had our first date and I know my heart leapt when I first saw your face. And I loved you when you spent your New Year with me and I loved you even more today, and I know I will continue to love you through the days that will pass.” He continued. “I love you, Maya. And I’m serious. I’m not leaving until I get an answer.”
Maya was at a standstill. She couldn’t believe if Richard did say those words or was she just imagining everything. Her heart was thumping loud and she could clearly hear it. Her mind was clouded with the squealing of her inner self but she was simply stunned to let it all out. She bowed her head down to look at their entwined hands. Richard was holding them so tightly like it was his source of strength. A tear fell from her eye when she lifted her head back up and faced him.
Richard warmly smiled at her. “Kakasabi ko lang kanina, hindi na kita papaiyakin eh.” He said as he lifted his hands to wipe them. “Why are you crying?” He softly said.
“Nakakainis ka kasi!” Maya said when she found her voice. “Hindi ko naman kasi ineexpect na gagawin mo ‘to. May harana ka pang nalalaman tapos ang dami pa nating audience eh pwede namang mag-usap na lang tayo.” Maya said.
“Dahil dun naiinis ka?” Richard asked with amusement in his eyes.
“Oo! Saka naiinis ako kasi ayaw mong makinig sa’kin. Dapat nandun ka lang sa kwarto mo, nagpapahinga. Kakagaling mo lang ng ospital kagabi Richard tapos kapag nasugod ka na naman don, galon na naman ‘tong iiiyak ko!” Maya continued to complain.
“Pwede ka namang hindi umiyak ah.” Richard teased. His hands are now back on hers, entwining his with hers.
“Hindi ko naman kasi mapigilan eh! Ewan ko ba. Ikaw kasi e! Bakit mo pa kasi inaway sina Nanay! Edi sana hindi ka inatake –“
“Kung hindi ko ginawa ‘yon, eh di sana malungkot ka pa rin?” Richard protested.
“Kaya nga eh! Naiinis ako sa’yo kasi .. kasi hindi mo iniintindi yung sarili mo. Mas inuuna mo pa ako kahit na hindi naman dapat.” Maya continued. It wasn’t the right time for an argument like this but she couldn’t help but to speak her mind.
“Why are we fighting?” Richard said in a calm tone. “Listen, I did it because I promised you that I will help you and because I can’t simply withstand seeing every day pass that the woman I love is simply using her smile as a mask.” Maya’s heart swelled even more with Richard’s words. His serenade was more than enough for her and hearing him speak like that was just too much. She just let her heart speak for her.
Maya removed her hands from Richard’s and hugged him tight. She just felt Richard’s arms on her waist, and his head resting on her shoulders. “Nakakainis ka.” Maya whispered as she sniffed.
“I know. You already said that a couple of times now.” He said and sighed. “May I ask for the last time why you find me nakakainis?”
“Kasi hindi ko malaman kung anong gagawin ko nung inatake ka.Umiyak na lang ako kasi natakot ako na baka mawala na naman yung taong mahal ko.” Maya said and felt the man she’s hugging went still. Richard loosened his hold to her and leaned back to look at her face. “Alam kong baka hindi ka maniwala kasi sinabi ko sa’yo na nalilito pa ko pero sigurado na ako, Richard. Sigurado na ako.”
Richard has this huge smile on his face as Maya said her piece. “I love you, Richard.” And that was it – Richard lost it and hugged Maya tight. He managed to lift her and spin around with her in his arms. He felt like the happiest man in the world that time. Maya loves me. Maya loves me! The crowd around them was also cheering and rooting for them. Most of them are even clapping. Maya’s parents also witnessed the whole thing as they stood together near their front door. They were also happy for the two of them.
“Tayo na di ba? You’re mine and I’m yours.” Richard asked when he put her down. Maya chuckled. “Oo, Ricardo, tayo na.” Richard’s smile got even wider. He leaned in and kissed Maya on her cheek making Maya blush. He just couldn’t help it. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Maya said back. Richard hugged her back again and Maya happily hugged back. “Richard, pumasok na tayo, baka ma-stress ka na.” Maya whispered.
Richard kissed her head. “Alright. Pero I know na hindi ako maii-stress. Walang makakasira ng araw ko because by the end of the day, I know that I have you.”
A/N : Thank you for being patient with me! The song I used was “Chinito” by “Yeng Constantino.” I was the one who changed the lyrics for this fanfic. God bless!
