Teresita was sitting beside her daughter, Maya, at the hospital, as they wait for Richard inside the room. Surprisingly, Richard already knew the drill on what he has to do after he got those chest pains. A doctor he knew visited him for an angiogram, where they would know if Richard heart is really fine. The doctor told them to just wait outside. Teresita could easily see her anxiousness on what Richard’s result will be. She smiled as she watched Maya walk back and forth in front of her. Maya would even glance at the door now and then just to see if Richard is already done.
Teresita said.
“Eh Nay, ang tagal ni Richard eh.” Maya said as she continued to walk. Teresita stood up and put her arms around Maya and assisted her to sit down.
Paano –“
“Pinapangunahan mo naman yung tao eh.” Teresita said. “Naniniwala akong maayos na si Richard. ‘Yun ang sabi niya sa’tin ‘di ba?”
Maya slowly nodded. Maya said.
Teresita stared at her daughter as she was looking at the door of the room.
Maya turned to look at her mother who’s now getting teary. Maya said.
Teresita reached for Maya’s hand. She said. Maya smiled at her mother and hugged her tight. She was completely happy with the result of all that confrontation the other night. “Salamat po Nay.” Maya said.
As soon as Teresita broke the hug, she wiped the tears on her face. She never felt so overwhelmed. She knew that she completely missed those hundred times that Maya would need someone to talk to. And now that the air is finally cleared between them, she vowed to herself that she’s not going to let another one pass by.
“Naiyak na naman kayo, Nay.” Maya said. “Sa inyo nga talaga ako nagmana eh.”
Teresita chuckled. “Wala, nak, eh. She teased and saw a smile crept on her daughter’s face. She tightened her hold on Maya’s hand. Maya went still.
Maya interrupted. She was just surprised that her mom was finally asking her these things. It was definitely a first to her. And also because the topic that she chose was about her feelings for Richard. Maya paused for a bit to think clearly. Then she sighed. “Ang gulo po no, Nay?
Teresita smiled at her daughter. She asked.
Maya simply answered.
Teresita gave Maya a look that she’s not satisfied with her daughter’s answer. “Yung totoo, Maya.”
Maya remained silent for a few beats to really think why her tears fell down without her permission. “Natakot nga po ako nay.” She insisted.
“Bakit ka natakot?”
Maya bit her lip before she answered. She said.
Teresita nodded slowly.
Her daughter frantically nodded. “Opo. Parang katulad po –“She abruptly stopped.
“Katulad ng ano, nak?” Teresita asked. She was certain that she finally hit Maya where she wanted.
“Katulad po nitong kay Richard.” Maya softly said. She turned to look at her mother who was smiling at her. “Bakit po, Nay?”
“Wala ka bang napapansin don, Maya?” She hopefully asked.
Maya’s brows knitted together. “Anong napapansin, Nay?”
Her mother sighed. She was having a trouble making Maya realize all of the things she just said. She said. Maya replied with a nod. Teresita continued but Maya just stared at her, but this time, her face showed like she just realized something.
At ‘yung ngiting ‘yon, iba, nak. Teresita said. She had no choice but to say all these things to make it clear to Maya. Even if she was years too late to be there for her daughter, she could easily tell that Maya was clearly in love with Richard.
Teresita said. She watched her daughter who seemed to be at a standstill at the words she said. After a few beats, Maya was about to say something when the door to Richard’s room opened.
The two of them, especially Maya, stand up to meet the doctor that was about to come out. “Doc, kamusta po si Richard? Ano na pong balita? Ayos na po ba siya? Yung .. yung –“ Maya stopped when she saw who the doctor is. “R-Ryan?”
Ryan gave a soft laughter when he saw Maya’s reaction. “Easy with the questions, Maya. He amusedly said. He saw the woman beside Maya looking confused on what is happening. “I’m Dr. Ryan Molina po. Cardiologist po ni Richard.” He said with a warm smile on his face.
Teresita replied.
“It’s a pleasure to meet Richard’s soon-to-be mother-in-law.” He teased earning him a slap on the arm courtesy of Maya.
“Nay, best friend po ‘yan ni Richard.” Maya said. Teresita nodded and smiled meaningfully.
“Anyway, Richard is in a good state. Just give him plenty of rest and he’s good to go. Avoid exposing him to stress din, nakakasama kasi sa kanya eh.” Ryan said. “Good thing I was here because of my fellow doctor’s wedding. I never thought this would happen to Richard since he was healthy ever since he got that heart in .. almost four years na rin pala.”
“Four years na, Ryan?” Maya asked. And Ryan nodded as his answer. “Around February. Why do you ask?”
Maya nodded slowly. “Kasi yung .. yung kaibigan kong si James, almost four years na ring patay. Naaksidente siya around February din.”
“What a coincidence.” Ryan commented. “I’ll be on my way, then. Wag niyo munang gisingin si Richard, nakatulog kasi.” He said and left.
Maya quickly entered Richard’s room and left Teresita outside. As Ryan said, Richard was asleep. Maya silently sat on the chair placed near his bed and watched him sleep. She doesn’t know why she felt happy when Ryan said that he was fine.
“Nak, wag mong gisingin ha.” Teresita whispered to her that made Maya to look up.
Maya said.
“Bakit nga ba niya ginawa ‘yon?” Teresita curiously asked.
A smile crept on Maya’s face. She clearly knows why.
She felt her mother’s hand squeeze her shoulder. She gave her daughter a hug and left. When Maya heard the door close, she reached for Richard’s hand and smiled at the sight of their hands clasped together.
“Oo, Richard. Alam ko na kung anong sagot ko.” She whispered.
Later that day, Richard was discharged from the hospital. Maya’s family still insisted that he should rest on their house since it was quite their fault for getting him in that state. Maya became his nurse the moment he was on his room. Richard even noticed the extra care and attention Maya was giving him. She would prefer to just sit around his room instead of mingling with her parents.
“Maya.” Richard called.
“O? May kailangan ka? Nagugutom ka ba?” Maya answered with a smile.
Richard smiled as he heard the thoughtfulness in Maya’s voice. “Even though I love what you are doing for me, ayaw mo bang bumaba? You know, to spend time with your family?”
“Hmm.” Maya shook her head. “Walang magbabantay sa’yo oh.”
“Maya, I’m not disabled. I thought Ryan told you that I’m fine?
“Okay.” He said with a smile on his face. A few minutes after Maya left, Cristina Rose came in.
“Mukhang gwardyado ka ni bunso ah!” Kute said. Richard smiled back.
Kute said as she sat on the chair beside his bed. “Ano nang plano?”
Maya woke up with a smile on her face. Her mind was telling her that it was another day where she’ll be taking care of Richard. Her smile got bigger when she her mind flashed a picture of Richard in her mind. For the first time since she met Richard, she finally squealed. She’s now allowing kilig in her life now. The talk between her and Teresita really helped her assess her feelings. Her mother was right. She wouldn’t cry for Richard just because she was scared that he was going to die. She was scared because she cannot view her life without Richard in it.
It was strange but Maya can hear music.. It was the sound of a guitar. At first, Maya found it enjoyable and thought it was all coming from her head. And then she realized, it was coming from outside. A knock on her door stopped her from going near the window. Teresita came inside when it opened.
“O Nay, bakit po?” Maya asked when Teresita held her by her shoulders and smiled at her. “May nanliligaw sa’yo sa baba.” She said.
Maya’s eyes widened. “Naku, Nay, hindi po ako nagpapaligaw. Saka sino po ba yan?” She worriedly asked.
Teresita continued as she pushed Maya to her window.
“Eh Nay, hindi po pwede kasi …” She trailed off. Teresita smiled at her. “Kasi ano?” She asked and was certain saw her daughter blush.
Eh –“ Teresita tested only to be interrupted by her daughter. “Hindi po si James.” Maya said. Teresita just eyed her as she waited for Maya to continue what she’s going to say. “K-kay Richard po.”
Maya was surprised when Teresita hugged her tight. Palagay ko, mas mahal mo ‘tong taong ‘to.”
Even if confused, Maya still followed what her mother said. After she parted the curtains that are blocking her view, she saw two figures standing below. One was holding a guitar while the other one was standing tall in his place, with his chinky-eyes staring at hers.
bitin ano po? Haha.
