Haha.
I enjoyed making this one. Masyadong maraming moments.
“Mahal mo bang talaga si Ricky?”
“Come with me.”
Roberto then walked somewhere in the corner of the room. Maya followed him.
“Hija, do you really love my son?”
“O – opo. Mahal ko po si Sir Chief.” She answered nervously.
Roberto looked away, as if trying to search for the right words to say.
“Sinabi ba niya sa’yo na nag-away kami?”, he asked.
“Uhm. Opo. Nagalit nga po ako sa kanya nung nalaman ko po.”
“Ha? Bakit ka nagalit?”
“Ehh kasi po, pinag-promise ko po siya na wag po kayong awayin. Ayun po, ilang araw kaming hindi nag-uusap. Pero ok na po kami ni Sir Chief.”
Roberto looked at her indifferently. “You got mad because of that?”
“Opo. Eh kasi inaway niya po kayo. Maswerte nga po si Sir Chief kasi may tatay po siyang katulad niyo na nandyan lagi. Dapat po tine-treasure niya bawat moment diba po? Wala man po akong tatay na kinalakihan, alam ko naman pong dapat hindi ganun ang trato sa inyo.”
“Wala kang tatay, hija?”
“Wala po. Nangibang-bahay po eh. Bata pa lang po kami nung iniwan kami tapos hindi na po bumalik.”
Roberto’s heart ached from what he heard.
So that’s why kahit ipagtabuyan ko na siya, she still tries to reach out for me. It’s because she’s longing for a father. It all makes sense now.
“Tito? Ok lang po ba kayo?” she panicked when Roberto didn’t say a word after she talked. “Teka lang po ikukuha ko po kayo ng tubig.” She’s almost gone when Roberto grabbed her arm.
“It’s ok, I’m fine hija.” Roberto smiled at her.
It was Maya’s turn to look at him indifferently. Tama ba yung nakita ko? Ngumiti sa’kin si Tito Roberto?
“Maya.”, its Richard. Then he saw his father. “Pa ..”
“Happy birthday, son.” Roberto said.
“Thank you, Pa.”
Roberto turned his attention to Maya. “Hija, do you have plans for tomorrow?”
Maya looked at Roberto, then to Richard who has his brows crossed, then back at Roberto. “Wa – wala naman po, pero may flight po ako sa gabi.”
“Good. Do you mind if we have lunch tomorrow?”
”Lunch. I’m inviting you for lunch.”
“Ahh. Si – sige po.”
“Great. I’ll text you, then.” Roberto started walking past them with a smile.
“Pa. What are you planning? I can’t really afford to have another argument with you –“
“Son, relax.” He said. Then he smiled. “It is about time that I get to know my soon-to-be daughter-in-law.”
He left Richard who he thinks is still in the middle of processing what he just said. He stopped again.
“Happy birthday, Ricky.”
Richard returned to Maya with a huge smile in his face.
“Sir Chief! Totoo ba yung sinabi nung papa mo? Lunch daw kasama ako.”
Richard could only nod, still wearing the smile on his face.
“Oh? Bakit sobra kang makangiti dyan? Ano bang napag-usapan mong papa mo?”
“ Nothing. He just gave me the best present ever.”
Maya is standing outside an old house where Roberto asked her to go. She nervously pushed the door bell, butterflies flying everywhere in her stomach.
Moments later, someone opened the gate – it was Roberto.
“Hija, pasok ka.” He said as he smiles.
“Ma-magandang tanghali po, Tito.”
“Call me Papa, Maya. Kailangan ngayon pa lang masanay ka na diba?”
Suddenly, all of the butterflies from her stomach were shooed.
Roberto toured her inside the house. It turned out that it was their old home.
They are currently eating lunch at the house.
“Salamat po sa tour, Pa.” Maya said. She can’t still believe that she finally have someone that she can call papa.
“It’s my pleasure, hija. Anyway, we’re not done yet. May isa pa tayong room na hindi napupuntahan.”
“Ano pong room?”
“Yung room ni Richard before.”
After they ate, Roberto led Maya in front of Richard’s old room.
“Go ahead.” Roberto said.
Maya grabbed the knob of the door and opened it.
Richard room is not big, nor small. The walls are painted blue and white. His bed is placed at the corner of the room, with a wooden table beside it. The table has so many books and papers. Maya walked into his table to inspect it further. She also saw frames with pictures in it – Richard with his parents, he by himself when he was still young and a picture with Alex.
“He loved her dearly.”, Roberto said when he noticed that Maya saw the picture. “That’s why he went through so much pain when Alex died.”
“College sweethearts po sila, diba?” Maya asked.
“Yes. Richard never looked for another woman when he met Alex.” He smiled at the thought.
Roberto went beside Maya and grabbed the solo picture of Richard.
“I believed from that moment that Alex is Richard’s soul mate.”
Maya felt a pinch in her heart. She suddenly frowned at the thought.
“But.” Roberto said as she looked at Maya. “I was proven wrong. It turned out that Alex was a bridge, a bridge that connected Richard to his true soul mate. A bridge that guided Richard to find you, Maya. I now truly believe that you’re his soul mate.”
A tear fell from Maya’s eye. She can’t believe that finally, the moment that she has been waiting for is now here.
“I’m really sorry hija if you and Richard went through so much trouble because of me. Forgive me for not opening my heart to what is really happening. It’s just that I find it hard seeing Ricky fall in love again and then his heart will get broken again. And I would see him trying so hard to put back the pieces of his heart. Masakit para sa isang ama ang makitang ganon ang anak niya.”
“Wag po kayong mag-alala Pa, sinisigurado ko pong ligtas yung puso ni Sir Chief sa’kin. Ibabalot ko po sa bubble wrap para po kahit anong pagsubok yung dadaanan namin, buo pa rin po ‘yun. Promise po yan.”, Maya said as she tries to stifle a sob.
Robert smiled at Maya’s promise. “I know that you’ll take care of him. That’s why payag na payag na ko sa inyong dalawa. I knew that you two are meant to be.”
Maya couldn’t contain her happiness that’s why she hugged Roberto. The old man, on the other hand, was shocked at the lady’s hug. But he realized that Maya longed for this moment, that’s why he hugged her back.
“I want to welcome you to the Lim family, hija.”
“Thank you po.” She said as the tears continue to fall.
“And one more thing, I want to apologize for mistaking you as a gold-digger. Pasensya ka na talaga.”
“Ok lang po ‘yun, at least po ok na ang lahat.”
Roberto smiled. “How do you do that?”
“Ang alin po?”
“Yung mga mabibigat na problema, parang ang gaan gaan lang sa’yo, parang wala lang.”
“Eh kasi po ang problema dapat po hindi pinoproblema kasi lalo lang po tayong maiistress. Mabablock po ‘yung blessings. Dapat po hinahayaan po natin na problemahin tayo nung problema.” She said.
Roberto let out a chuckle. “I find you very amusing, Maya. I can clearly see why my son changed.”
Maya blushed to what he said.
“At isa pa, last na ‘to. ‘Wag kang mahihiyang tawagin ako na Papa, ok? Gusto kong ako ang tumayong Papa mo, kapalit ng mga taong wala kang tatay na kinalakihan. I know that you’re longing for him. And do you know that I’m also longing for a daughter? Kaya we’re even.”
“Si Papa naman, pinapaiyak pa ko lalo.”
He laughed. Then he gave the picture of little Richard to Maya.
“Here. I believe that you deserve this. You deserve him.”
Tears are flowing from her eyes again. “Thank you po talaga Papa!”
“I should be the one thankful, Hija. O sya, let’s go? Your Mama Esme and I still need to pack our things and move back to Ricky’s house. Masyadong mahal sa hotel.”
Maya chuckled. “Tulungan ko na po kayo.”
“Sure. And while you’re helping, siguro we can discuss the wedding?” he teased.
Maya blushed. “Papa naman eh! Wedding po agad?”
He laughed. “Bakit? Doon din naman mapupunta ang lahat diba? Sabi nga, sa hinaba-haba man ng prusisyon .. “ he paused, waiting for Maya to continue the sentence.
“ .. sa simbahan pa rin ang tuloy.” She said softly.
“There you go!” he said.
“Naman po ehh!”
Roberto laughed at Maya’s expression. “Bahala ka dyan, hija. But all I know is diyan din pupunta ang lahat. I can sense it.”
And Roberto is right. While Maya and Roberto are having their father-daughter-in-law moments, Richard is already choosing an engagement ring for Maya.
