Seize the Day 6

I found myself sitting on one of the stumps of the island. Where’s Maya?! Is she really dead? The crew of Time Airways are now assisting the people to go inside the plane.

I feel shattered. There’s no Maya anymore. I even look like I’m in so much agony. My shirt’s now tucked out, my hair is a mess. My heart was once broken, and now it’s broken again and I know deep down, it can’t be fixed. I don’t know how to tell my kids, I don’t know how to tell her family. I don’t even know how I will accept this. I should have expressed how much I love her before she left. I should have.

Then suddenly, I heard her voice.

“Dalian mo Edz! Naalis na sila!”

Is it her? Lumingon lingon ako. Hoping to see her face again. Pero wala eh.

She’s now laughing. “Edz! Lalampa-lampa ka naman eh!”

Then I saw her. She’s walking with her fellow FA, Edz. They’re headed toward us. She’s getting nearer. Is it my dream? Am I hallucinating?

“MAYA!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. Lumingon siya, pero hindi niya ako makita. “MAYA!!!” Then she saw me. Is it really her?

She’s now running to reach me. I can’t bring myself to move. She hugged me when she reached me.

“Richard?” I can see that she’s crying. “Totoo ba ‘to?”

I put my hand on her cheek. A tear escaped from my eye. Then after a million years, I finally smiled. “You’re alive.” Then I hugged her tight again. “You’re alive! Oh God, Maya. Akala ko wala ka na, bakit kasi wala ka dito eh.”

Kumalas siya sa pagkakayakap ko. “Eh kasi si Edz, nagyaya na mag-gala raw dito sa isla. Ehh ayun sinamahan ko.”

I cupped her face. Her hands are now lying on my arms. “Ok ka lang ba? May masakit ba sa’yo? May sugat ka ba?” I scanned her arm, her face and I finally put my hands on her shoulders. “Ano? Maya, sumagot ka.”

She’s crying again. “Nandtio ka nga talaga. Natakot kasi ako, na baka hindi ko na ulit makita sina Nanay, pati sina Abbie, sina Manang Fe, at syempre, natakot ako na baka hindi na ulit kita makita, Richard.”

“Hush.” I hugged her again. Then I kissed her head. I’m so glad that she’s here, in my arms. “Natakot din ako Maya. Akala ko hindi na ulit kita makikita. I thought I lost the last woman I’m going to love. I missed you so much.”

Nakasakay na kami sa eroplano. Katabi ko si Maya and I’m holding her hand since we got inside. I’m not going to let her go again.

Maya explained to me what happened.

“Go to sleep, Maya.”

“I’m not leaving you, Maya. Kahit iposas mo yung kamay ko sa kamay mo. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Totoo na ba talaga ‘to?”

“Oo.” I kissed her forehead. “Hindi ka nanaginip.”

She smiled. I kissed her hair. “I love you, Maya.”

“I love you, too Richard.” Then we both fell asleep.

It’s already midnight nung nakabalik ang eroplano sa Maynila. Then I drove to my house.

“Sa bahay ka muna matulog, Maya.”

“Ha? Ehh dun na ko kina Emman.”
“I insist.”

“Ehh naman Richard.”

“Maya.”

“Fine. Sige na nga. Saka para makapagpahinga ka na din. Hindi ka pa nakakatulog ng maayos no?”

”What makes you say that?”

“Eye bugs mo o. Laki na.” Then she laughed.

“Eh ikaw kasi eh. Mamamatay na ako kakahanap ng paraan para mahanap kita.”

I heard her smile. “Kaya naman mahal kita eh.”

Now it’s my turn to smile.

We arrived at the house 30 minutes past midnight. Tulog na silang lahat.

“Richard. San ako tutulog?”

“Sa kwarto ko.”

“HA? Sa kwarto mo?”

“Oo.” We’re talking while we’re going upstairs. “Sa couch ako, sa kama ka.”

“Ahhh.”

“Buhatin na kita. Yang paa mo o.”

“Hindi na. Kaya ko ‘to.”

Nagpalit na kami ng pangtulog. Tapos bumaba ulit kami to eat midnight snacks.

“Kape, Richard?”

“Maya, as much as I want to taste your coffee again, I can’t. I want to sleep.”
She laughed. “Ok. Tubig na lang.”
“Ako na kukuha.” I told her while she’s making sandwiches for the two of us.

“Siguro naman bibigyan ka nila ng day off para sa insidenteng yan.” Sabi ko.

“Hmm!” nakain kasi. “Oo, isang buwan nga daw eh.”

I smiled. “Good.”

After eating, umakyat na kami. It’s a little past 1. She’s already lying down. I’m still sitting, watching her.

“Bakit Richard?”

“Wala lang.” I smiled. “Alam mo Maya, nung mga araw na nawawala ka, hindi ako makangiti. Parang ako si Luke nung nakipag-break sa kanya si Joey.”

Umupo siya mula sa pagkahiga niya. “Kaya Richard, ngingiti ka na lagi ha?”

“Opo.” We both laughed.

“Pano ka nga pala nakasama dun sa flight?”

“Believe it or not, I owe it all to James Ventura.”

“Oh?”

“Yep. Naitext mo na ba sina Cristina Rose?”

“Hindi pa, Richard. Lobat kasi yung phone ko eh.”

“Ahh, sige. Matulog ka na.” I’m sure nabalita na ‘to sa TV. Alam kong alam na nilang buhay si Maya.

We both lie down. But I can’t sleep. I can’t believe that she’s here. And to top it all, she’s here sleeping in my bed. Ipapakilala ko na talaga siya kina Abbie. I don’t care what they think.

“Richard?”

“Hmm?”

“Tu – tumabi ka na dito o.”

“Ha?” Ok, my heart just started pounding.

“Eh ang laki kasi ng kama mo eh. Saka namamaluktot ka diyan.”
“Sure ka?”

“ . . Oo.” Mahina nyang sagot.

I transferred to my bed.  My heart is still pounding. I’m going to sleep beside her.

“Uhm,” sabi niya.

“Maglalagay na lang ako ng unan sa gitna.” I know she’s not ready to sleep with someone yet.

“Ok. Goodnight, Richard.”

“Goodnight, Maya.”
