“Liza, cancel all my appointments for this evening.”
“Yes, Sir. May lakad kayo Sir?”
“Yes. Sige Liza, una na ko.”
“Ok sir, ingat po kayo.”
Two months had passed and I think that I should do what Manang Fe told me not so long ago. I have to tell her about me having the surname of Lim. I want her to know everything about me because I think that I am falling for her.
I’ve spent most of my days talking to her. I even exchange text messages with her even though I have meetings and stuffs. She tells me everything that happened to her during the day. We even celebrated her first day of work, we laughed on the first day she got scolded by her boss, and there’s so much more. I have to admit though, she somehow changed me. Manang Fe is always telling me that she might be a blessing in disguise because I’m always smiling ever since I’ve met her. Well, it’s because of her, indeed. Nakakahawa kasi siya. But I’ve always felt that I’m being unfair to her since yun nga, hindi pa niya ako talaga nakikilala.
“Oy Richard, asan ka na?” text ni Maya.
“Pakaon na ako. Wait for me.”
I’m wearing a suit today. It’s a part what she must know.
Few minutes later, I arrived at Maya’s workplace. I saw her talking to her officemates.
“Maya.” I called as I approach her.
“Ay, nandyan na siya. Bye guys!” sabi niya sa mga officemates niya. “O, bakit napaka-formal naman ng suot mo?”
“Date natin eh. Hindi ba bagay?”
“Bagay no, ang pogi mo kaya. Eh kaso sobrang formal naman. Hiniram mo pa yata ‘yan sa boss mo.”
Kung alam mo lang, Maya. “Let’s go.” I can see the eyes of her officemates following us while chattering with the others.
I opened the car door for her. “Oy, Chard, sikat ka na sa mga katrabaho ko. Ang pogi mo daw.” Sabay tawa. “Ay, teka, bakit dala mo yang kotse?”
“Ha? Eh diba aalis tayo?”
“Hay nako, Chard, masasayang ang krudo nan, baka magalit ang amo mo. Tara na’t mag-commute.” Then she held my hand and off we go.
Magko-commute? We rode in silence. Actually, I was the one who is quiet. Bumaba kami ni Maya sa isang park. Even though I looked so serious since we got there, she managed to brighten up my mood. Nag-gala na kami sa park.
Kung saan-saan kami nagpupunta. She usually asks me to take her picture on her phone. And while she’s browising her photos, I took a picture of her on my phone without her noticing it.
Sabi niya.
“There’s a first time for everything diba?” sagot ko.
She laughed. “Totoo ‘yun, Chard.” Then we continued eating. “Oy Chard, may girlfriend ka na ba?” tanong niya.
I choked. “Wala. Baket? Gusto mong mag-apply?”
She blushed. “Wala akong sinasabe no!”
I laughed. “Namumula ka o.”
“Ay naman Chard!” pinalo niya yung braso ko. Then she also laughed. “Ehh . . bakit wala ka pang girlfriend?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. Hindi pa siya nadating ‘yung babaeng magugustuhan ko eh.” But I think I’m looking at her now.
“Eh ikaw, may boyfriend ka na?”
“Wala rin. Gusto mo rin atang mag-apply eh?”
“Why not?” sagot ko.
Natulala siya bigla. Then she blushed. “Oy, nagbibiro lang ako.” Sabi ko.
“Ahhhh naman Richard!!!” she pinched my cheeks.
“Ikaw kasi eh!”
Gumanti ako. Pinisil ko rin siya sa pisngi. “ARAAAAY!!” sigaw niya. But she’s laughing. “Aray naman!”
Ang ingay namin sa loob ng karinderya. Pinagtitinginan na kami ng mga tao. I’ve heard some complaining and I’ve heard some say na ang sweet namin.
Muntikan na siyang ma-out of balance, buti at nasalo ko.
“Ano ba kasing iniisip mo? Matutumba ka na tuloy eh.” Sabi ko.
“Sorry naman Kuya.” Pabirong sabi niya.
After that, she was lost in thought again. That’s why I decided to hold her hand.
Baka kasi may dumanggil pa ulit eh. Then we rode on my car in silence.
“Are you ok, Maya?”
Tumango lang siya, hindi tumitingin sa’kin. “Oy, Ate, ok ka lang ba talaga?”
“Ito namang si Chard! Maka-Ate eh!” sagot niya. I smiled.
“Chard . . salamat ha?” sabi ni Maya.
“It’s my pleasure. Bakit bigla kang tumahimik?”
“Ehh . . ikaw kasi eh!!” she pinched my cheeks again.
“Araaay! Nakakarami ka na Maya ha!” kiniliti ko siya ngayon.
Then she ran and hinabol ko siya. Our laughs are the only thing you can hear on our street. It’s like we’re kids
again. Running around, laughing like there’s no tomorrow and does not care what others think.
“Ayoko na!” sabi ko. Then I sat on the bench.
“Hay nako, Chard, tumatanda ka na eh!”
I’m out of breath and we’re laughing because of our own foolishness.
“MAYAAA!!” a booming sound came from inside the house.
“Naku Chard, hinahanap na naman ako. Sige Goodnight na!”
“Sige.” I kissed her on her cheek. “Goodnight Maya.”
Nagmamadali na siya pag-alis. “Maya!” tawag ko. She looked back. “Mag-aapply ako.”
“Ha? Apply saan?”
I smirked. “To be your boyfriend.”
